oil change MTD wood splitter??

Wonder if anyone can tell me the best way to change the engine oil on an
MTD wood splitter with a B&S Quantum XE 6 hp engine. There's a plug on the
bottom, but using this makes one heck of a mess. Any better way to drain the oil?

Consider a Vacuum Oil Extraction unit.
