After each extended use I notice that around the black plate that is bolted onto the hydro oil tank there is a path of dirt which covers a thin path of oil.....all the way around the plate. I clean this each time but it always reappears. The Florida person that recently sold his 422 in TBN said he replaced the gasket under the plate...is this the problem? I have checked the bolts and they are tight...not really a problem but more of a nuisance.

Mine does the the same thing I also am considering making a new gasket.

Mine does the same thing around the edge of the cover and around the cap. The cap I think is from the venting. I just keep a roll of paper towels in the garage and wipe it down after use. One or two towels is all it takes. I chose to turn that particular lemon into lemonade by thinking of it this way... the paint will never rust around the hydraulic reservoir cover. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif It just isn't worth fixing on my unit, yet. I have never noticed any loss of hydraulic fluid level in 3 years.

My 1845 did the same until I removed the cover and put a bead of good sealer under it. PT doesn't use enough glue. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Farmall,
Had the same problem with the 425. Removed the plate and made a new gasket. Not a problem since.

Surprise, surprise!! I had the same leak around that plate!! After removing the plate, I found that PT does not use a gasket! Some sort of HARD sealant that was crumbling into small pieces and falling into the tank!!

The easy repair is to carefully remove all the old sealant, wipe the surfaces dry with solvent, add split lockwashers to the bolts BETWEEN the cover and the tank, apply a bead of Permatex to both mating cover and tank surfaces and around the washers, tighten bolts snugly, allow to dry overnight.

Problem solved!!

PS: Do not use regular silicon caulk! It is not oil resistant!

Interesting...but how did you come up with the notion of the washers between the tank and cover???????? It wouls seem to me that you would want full and even contact between the tank-gasket-cover??? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

"" washers between the tank and cover ""
"" even contact between the tank-gasket-cover ""

There is no gasket!! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif The Permatex, with the help of the washers, forms a 1/16" thick silicon rubber 'gasket' between, and glued to, both the cover and the tank.
If the washers are not used, the Permatex is too thin to retain its integrity during physical and thermal movement.

Run a bead (>1/16" & <1/8") of Permatex around the opening of the tank, inboard of the bolt holes. Prime the cover with a thin coating of Permatex where it will contact the bead. Place the washers over the tank bolt holes. Immediately lower the cover into place without horizontal movement. Install and progressively tighten the bolts. Allow to properly cure.

PS: Small O.D. flat washers could also be used.

Yet another cool thing about this website, if you procrastinate long enough, someone else will ask your question for you. I have the same problem.

I also have a frustrating small engine oil leak at the back of the engine. I am fairly sure that it is simply a clamp that needs to be tightened, but I can't get a screwdriver in there from any angle. I hope I will be able to solve the problem with an adjustable angle socket and a screwdriver fitting. Just have not had time to dig it out and try it. Some access panels into the tub of the unit would sure be nice.
