I got a bill for $25.70 for parts when they did the PTO button and Ujoint grease. Said they added some 5w30 oil to the engine. Told them that's bad business of not getting it into the other charge ($476) and that it should not have needed oil. Last time I checked it, it was bright and clear and full.

Anyway. Notably that they used 5w30, just like is speced for our VW TDIs for eons in all kinds of climates here.

Don't need 40w for a diesel engine.

For years 15W-40 was THE recommended oil for diesel engines. Check your owner's manual for oil recommendations. There is a wide range of recommended oils for the newer tractors and yes, some even recommend 5w-30. The important thing to watch is the API rating and whether it's recommended for use in a diesel engine. Some oils are fine in either diesel or gasoline engines.

Many times a new engine will use some oil until it is broken in.
