Interesting but not a new concept. Years ago when I used to install Radio equipment in automobiles, We installed a lot of control head brackets and speaker brackets on the transmission tunnels of the vehicles. Instead of drilling a pilot hole for the screws, we alway used an ice pick to make a starter hole. There were two good reasons this is a better method. One is that the ice pick, much like this drilling method illustrated in the video makes much more surface for the sheet metal screw to grab on to as it displaces the metal downward in an inverted cone instead of removing it metal like a drill bit would. The second reason is the drill bits would often grab the carpet and wind it up on the bit, where the punch method does not do this.
