Odd problem with Case backhoe

Hello,

I've got a 1994 Case 480F backhoe, less than 500 hrs, that worked great the last time I moved it and now it won't budge in either direction. It doesn't even klunk as when it drops into gear. The shuttle handle itself works fine and the hydraulics work. The only thing that's happened since the last time is recharging the battery. Also, mice damage is possible.

Any simple things to check first?

Make sure your trans "kick out" solenoid is plugged up and working.

Looks like a can of beans on the left side of the shuttle trans. Has a two wire plug coming out of the side. Make sure your getting power to it. This is makes the shuttle
kick out of gear when you push the button on the loader control.

Make sure it's threaded on all the way. The old one on my 580D backed off every now and then. When that happens, the detent in the trans kicks into "neutral." You can see the detent sticking out if it isn't on all the way.

I replaced mine to make the button work. When I bought the tractor, the wires were pulled out of the housing.

If this doesn't work, Post again and we'll try again...

The simplest thing i can think of would be to check the transmission fluid level . Even a very slow leak can drain it in time .

I should reword what I said... If the solenoid has power, it kicks the trans into neutral.
If the wires were bared and touching it would result in a neutral.

I don't mean to insult... Is the floor shifter in gear? Will it not pull in any gears?

Sorry for the delay in responding. Looks like it will be awhile until I can get to work on the backhoe. I'll post back when I find something. In the meantime, Scott, no insult taken. That's just the kind of brain-fade that happens from time to time, and I didn't try other gears either.

Uh, hmm, it was the transmission in neutral, as Scott suggested. I guess I think of neutral on the shuttle and spaced the neutral on the tranny. Man, am I embarrassed but also relieved that it didn't turn into a big deal. Thanks, Scott!

Vroom, Vroom... "why don't it go?"........ DOH!

A few years ago I worked in a warehouse driving a lift. One of my co workers had a late nighter with the boys and then worked our 12 hour shift. The forklifts only had fwd/rev shuttle like a backhoe, no floor shift... Shift over, We are in the parking lot and the turn signals are going on his truck... He was still trying to shuttle. Got it together and left out... Much abuse on the next day...

Nice to hear you found the problem, and it was just a simple oversight.

I have a New Holland backhoe and earlier this year, while pushing up a log pile before starting the fire, I got stuck in forward. I was pushing and couldn't get it to go into reverse. Eventually I figured that if I put my landing gear down and got the tires off of the ground, I could get it into neutral and push myself backwards with the bucket. That got me out of the burn pile and to the shop. I sure am happy that the fire wasn't going when this happened!!!

My problem was in the switch on the steering wheel column. I tested the solenoids on top of the transmission and could get them to change from forward to reverse by applying power directly, but not with the switch. I replaced the switch with a new one and it's all good again.

Another time, my dad was on the backhoe and he told me that it stopped moving. It wouldn't go forward or backwards. I runs fine, but nothing happens. I crawled under it, and saw right away that the driveshaft had come off. There are 8 bolts that hold it onto the back of the transmission. They must have come loose to the point that only a few were left. Two of them broke off and the others just disappeared. I drilled out the broken bolts and installed new grade 8 bolts with Loctite. Problem solved.
