Looking for comments on Kubota dealers in northwestern PA.

I tried to deal with Jenks when I bought my BX1800, found his pricing to be way too stiff for my tast. He tried to sell it to me at full retail, I bought closer to home at Bortnicks and received a pretty good deal. At the time Bortnick was only $50.00 more than Carver.

Are you planning on buying a heavy duty trailer that will haul the tractor? (i.e. how far are you willing to travel?)
Also what tractor are you wanting to buy?

I purchased my BX2200 from John Pero of Fruit Acres Tractor near Erie PA. I was happy with his support. My local dealer would not match his price. I would recommend him.

When you buy out of state the dealer has you sign a sheet stating you are a PA res. Then if the state finds out, you have to pay it. I found the best deal in state. I would try to stay close tyo home for warrentee work. I think I have a fuel tank leak so mine will have to go back again!

I'd second the recommendation for John Pero of Fruit Acres in North East PA. No, not the north eastern part of the state, but in North East which should be a lot closer to you than to me in Beaver County. I've had my BX for over a year, and Pero has taken care of supplying parts for my warranty needs, with me doing the work. Fortunately, nothing that I haven't been able to handle. Seems the my local dealer balks at taking care of even the smallest problem since I didn't by from them, even though Kubota says your warranty is good at every dealer. If and when I upgrade, I'll give Pero another consideration.

re Taxes ...

If you're buying a L3710hst 4wd for puttering around in the backyard ;^) it's probably taxable. If there is a for-profit business motive involved you can get a *huge* tax break.

First, since you're looking at $1000 or more in state sales tax it would be worth your while to spend $50 and talk to a tax advisor. PA has some sales tax exemption rules that apply to farm equipment and some other categories. There is some form you have to fill out. I've also read that PA isn't going to collect sales tax for internet purchases - so if you can get a dealer to accept an order by email you *may* have an out. Also I believe that if the transaction takes place in another state PA has no claim on the tax even if you bring the tractor back to PA. A tax advisor could tell what is possible.

If it's for business the price gets written off your federal return (against profits) according to a depreciation schedule. Checkout the section 179 of the Federal tax rules too. Most business equipment you can write off up to about $24k in the first year (against profits) which would be a huge price break. You don't need to be incorporated, you just need to have a legit business with enough profit to write off the cost against. It's like buying it with pre-tax dollars (and there are always a lot more of those). If you write the expense off you'll eventuallt have to pay some taxes on the proceeds when you go to sell it but it's a great deal.

The IRS will disallow hobby use - but if you use the tractor to make a profit beyond your expenses you can use that pre-tax profit against the cost.

I'm not a tax expert, but I do run a small business and this is my impression of the tax laws. Take it as non-expert advice with a grain of salt, but it's worth looking into with a tax advisor - one that understands small businesses.
