I need to transfer fuel out of my boat. It has 103 gallons of gas sitting in it. The boat shop says that the fuel has started to separate and it is ruining the fuel pump on my outboard. I have gone through two pumps in less than 3 months. Apparently the ethanol in the gas starts to separate after a year or so.

The question is will this pump work for Gas.

What I would like to do is buy it use it for the boat and then set up a permanent diesel pump station for my tractor.

There's a link to the manual on the NT page. It specifically says the pump cannot be used for gasoline due to explosion hazard.

If the boat is on a trailer or slip, can you just siphon the fuel out? Might even be able to reroute the existing fuel line out through a drain hole at the back of the boat and use it to (slowly) drain the tank.

I agree with Rus geek, siphoning would probably your best bet.

1*I would not use a diesel pump for gas due to the explosion hazard.

2*I would just get a diesel pump and set it up for the tractor and find a better way to empty the gas out of the boat.

I read the same thing. No gas due to possible explosion. I understand that they are worried that the spark of the motor could ignite the fumes/gas. The truth of it is you could throw a lit cigarette in a can of can and it will go out.

I am more concerned that the gas might damage the pump. Though they do make a valid point.

Does anyone know of a pump that will do both and is 12v powered.

I run a marine business and what I use is a small inline 40 gallon per hour pump like this one. I get them at Auto Zone or O'reilly's for about $40 or so then just un-hook the hose going to the engine, put the pump in, and attach a 10' piece of hose going out. You can then put 55 gallon drums next to the boat and pump it out. They are 12 volt, cheap, and pump quickly. You will have the job done in a few hours. I like to wire it up with a switch in line with the positive and use alligator clips to the batter of the boat.

Just a side note. Sta-Bil now makes a marine grade fuel stabilizer for ethanol. The container is only 12oz or so but treats something like 80 or 100 gallons as compared to the old red Sta-Bil that took 32oz to treat 80 gallons.

I bought this pump at Tractor Supply. GPI EZ-8 Fuel Pump - 3858004 | Tractor Supply Company Gasoline can be pumped with it.

I bought it to transfer 350 gallons of fuel oil that was given to me. The pump now rests in a 55 gallon drum to fuel my tractor. It has a short duty cycle of 15 minutes on/30 minutes off, but will easily fill up two 55 gallon drums with out tripping. This is GPI's entry level pump but it works great. Seem's to be quality built, hence the price.

Quick question for Diamondpilot or anyone else

The engine is a 2003 250 Johnson/Evinrude, the boat 2002. Basically there has been fuel in the tank for 2 ｽ years. Last year I put 50 gallons in to mix with the year prior so it is basically full now. The dealer is saying the fuel is what is damaging the fuel line and pump. They replaced the pump and some other components twice this year. I did put in stabilizer and had it winterized by the dealer who also put in stabilizer.

Long story short, do you think I can just put in more stabilizer or is it to late and best off draining the fuel and put in new. I have two small kids and had high expectations to use it and never did.

The good thing is I get to use the tractor all the time because it is out my back door. Even the wife says the tractor is the best purchase yet.

I put fuel stabilizer in the 18 gallon tank on my pontoon boat. The motor would not run. It was new fuel. I was told by more than one marine mechanic not to mix fuel stabilizer with outboard 2 stroke oil. The new marine stabilizer is supposed to work with outboard 2 stroke oil.

I had to "pour out" 18 gallons of gas and replace it with new gas.

Drain it. I see fuel issues with boats all the time where the fuel is 2 years old or older all the time. Pouring stabilizer in it will do nothing at this point.

Its a double edges sword. You must keep the tank full to prevent condensation but you must also use it regularly to keep the fuel fresh. Hunt for fuel with no ethanol will help. All the on water pumps in my area are strait gas for now, no ethanol but about $1 per gallon more expensive than the on land stations.
