Hi, I have a early 90s craftsman GT6000 with a 20hp kohler twin. I was mowing and it blew white smoke and died, it's not ceased up, it looks like it's the starter, soliniod, or the battery. Does any body have any suggestions????

Blow white smoke? Either we have a new pope, or you've blown something. :D
Sorry.

Blowing black, blue or white smoke doesn't usually have much to do with the parts you mentioned, electrical parts.

Blowing out smoke means something gave way within the engine, often times. Don't go buying starters and batteries quite yet. Get the thing diagnosed first.

Yeah, well I worked on it with my grandpa, but he was more worried about it not starting. Im not positive that something's blow, because it did this one other time but the engine didnt die, it just blew out white smoke.

I went to my barn with one of my best friends he got on it lookin at it and he noticed that the deck was still en-gauged (it stoped when I was mowing and I never shut the blades off) and it smoked because he said and showed me that there's oil in the muffler so that's why it went up in smoke. He says that the engine got flooded with oil that's why it died. I'm learning about engines now just the simple stuff cause I'm only 12 so I mean I can change the spark plug and stuff I'm going to learn how to change the oil and oil filter to. My friend he's my age but he's really good with engines he works on lawnmowers for people.

Oh and he says the reason the oil got in the muffler because I was going and a really tight circle so it sloshed around and got in

I could be wrong. But on the blowing white smoke. Sounds like you got some worn out piston rings. These are the rings that fit in the grooves of the pistons.

The oil could be bypassing the rings and and getting into your exhaust that way. Pull out both spark plugs and check to see if the spark plugs are saturated with oil. They shouldn't be.

Here's an image of the rings and pistons.

I had an engine blow white smoke before and it turned out to be the piston rings. This was on a single cylinder though.

When I bought the set of rings it was $35.00.

Oh and he says the reason the oil got in the muffler because I was going and a really tight circle so it sloshed around and got in.

Did you have the tractor on an angle when going around the tight circle? "Like almost tipping it over" The engine would have to be tipped at an angle for the oil to get in that way.

Just going around a circle and even a tight one shouldn't let oil get into your muffler.

Hope you get it figured out. But I'm sure the engine's gonna need a new set of rings.

Good luck.

Chad

Whoa....you were operating on a slope when this happened...that could explain it all...If you were on a steep enough angle and operated the engine at that angle long enough the engine could have been starved for oil and seized up...It happened to me on a log splitter once..I did not have it level and it blew the engine....Just something to think about.

No it was a Small slope just a little angle that it was on

You are sucking oil in the valve breather, there was/is a recall on these engines, I recommend a new plug and reducing the oil volume till it reads 1/16 of an inch below full with the dipstick fully in. I believe the recall includes a modified valve breather and shorter dipstick.
