injector?

I went to buy a truck from a guy today and have been interested in tractors lately. In fact I just bought a YanmaR 2210D that I have to pick up neXt month.

That said, this guy has a CASE 580 C. backhoe that I would love to have. It needs tires and starts right up. But its leaking fuel out of what I think is the fuel injector pump? Guy is 23 YEARS OLD IMG_20131129_194338.jpg and selling things off for his grandmother. He talking like $3500.00 for this hoe which will need four tires and this fuel inujector pump. The guy was told $200 to rebuild this pump. Does that sound like its a real price.

When I go to check these on line, they range from $1,167 new down to rebuilt for around $700.00. I need to know what I am getting into but feel the rig is a great price. 580 C was built between 1975-1980. its a 2x4 with locking rear.

Looking for a little advise and since I am new on here for the Yanmar and dont know where else to ask, i thought I would ask.???????

Guessing it's where the injector lines attach to the pump, and air from the fan blowing the fuel back. The lower banjo fitting appears to be pretty damp, causing a reflection. So probabaly the one above it. It takes two copper washers for each line, and they are 20 cents each.

And as mentioned, could be where the fuel line attaches. Takes a small 3/8" rubber sleeve seal. 64 cents each.

I dont really kknow the guy who selling it or his skills. I know that they have tried to fix it on the cheap as they installed a copper valve into the fuel line so as to stop the fuel from leaking when not running. They turn it on like a sorinkler valve and run it and it leaks, dripping the entire time its on. Then when off they turn that valve so it doe snot leak when off. I was trying to get an idea on if these pumps can leak from a seal in the pump as they say they have tried the other stuff. If I do get it at the $3500 I think its worth a shot at fixing the stuff. I have a friend who had several backhoes. He said he has free front tires in nice shape. I asked him and he said rears are like $450 each around here. I could really use this piece of equipment on the ranch.

If it runs, then the injector pump is working fine and doesn't need an expensive rebuild and likely just needs some cheap o-ring or copper washers to fix the leak. What about the hydraulic cylinders? Do they leak? Leaks in cylinders = expensive repairs unless doing the work yourself. How tight is the joints on the backhoe, ie does it have a lot of slop in them especially in the swing cylinders as those are about the hardest to get to to fix.

Gary all the hydraulics all work but I dont know about thre cylinders. And I didnt check the slop in the parts mentioned. If I get a chance at buying it I will check it out as I am now learning a lot. Do you check these out like A vehicle ujoint? Just grab it and see if there is some play?

Sounds like the little sleeve where the line fastens on. #9 in the exploded view. Official Case Construction Equipment Online Parts Store and Parts Look Up. Parts for Case Equipment and Construction Equipment. Parts Store for Case Wheel Loaders, Case Excavators, Case Skid Steers, Case Original Parts.

As mentioned, they are 64 cents ea.

The PO of my 480C tried cotton string, like used on a chalk line as a seal/packing. Needless to say, that didn't work well. Hopefully they still have the original fuel line, if they didn't mess it up. You can get a new one, but if it's the one I'm thinking, it's $21.50.

With the boom up, you could probably try and move it sideways back and forth, and check for some slop. But the best way is to fire it up, and cycle all functions.

If cylinders are leaking, they should show oil where the rod comes out of the cylinder.

I can get cylinders rebuilt locally for right at $75.00 each. Half that is parts. If I remember correctly, cylinder caps are supposed to be torqued at close to 400 ft. lbs. So it's lots easier to drop off a cylinder, and pick it up later.

A couple other important things to check...

#1. The brakes. If it has good pedal, but no stopping power, could be a master cylinder, brake actuators froze up, or the disc brakes are oil soaked. Not a bad fix, and I have a good line on aftermarket parts to fix that. Preformed brake lines through Case are rather pricey, like $75.00 ea. I bought a kit to make my own + NiCop line, and still saved money.

#2. Make sure the shuttle works, from forward to reverse. Just come to a complete stop, before changing directions. Try all 4 gears, and make sure the torque converter is working properly.

If you decide to get it, spend a few bucks more, and find you an OEM Case service manual. Usually get them reasonable on ebay. They are very descriptive, and give step by step directions, along with photo's. Well worth the money..!!

Check the front axle where the spindles go vertical through it . Pick up the front and shake the wheels . If it is like the E I had , there are needle bearings top and bottom that go bad . Then the shaft destroys the axle . I was able to get mine machined and sleeved for new bearings , about 250$ . Price is good if you don't spend 5000.00 more fixing things . Good luck , a backhoe is very handy .
