I've been using 'Norton Internet Security' (firewall program) for about a year now. I also use 'Norton Anti-virus'. Both of these programs update themselves automatically every two or three days. I use Direcway two-way sattelite to connect to the web. Well, it seems now that Norton has decided that I should not be able to use Eplorer or Netscape. I can access pop mail and smt servers. I can even AOL instant message. The only way to surf the net is to disable my proxy server or to disable the Norton Internet Security program. Disabling the proxy allows me to browse, but it is really slow. I am considering uninstalling the Internet security program and just running "exposed". /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
You would not believe how many hours I have invested in trying to solve this problem. Seems like a week of my life has just been wasted. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

A lot of people seem to have problems with Norton stuff.

I would suggest some sort of hardware firewall. For example, we use an ISDN terminal adapter with a built in hub and router with IP masquerading. According to the test sites like www.grc.com, they can't see our computers at all.

Since you use DirecWay, and there are probably latency issues, I would surf the satellite news groups and see what other DirecWay users are doing. You might search Google on "DirecWay hardware firewall." Look at the Google groups threads to see what is being said on USENET.

If you are using XP, it has a built in firewall. It's better than nothing. I assume you have it turned on.

Could you tell us what happens when you try to access the Internet? Is it possible that you home page has made it onto the blocked sites list? A few more details may help.

I am using Windows 2000 so I don't get the XP Firewall. Also, Direcway uses your computer to run the modem. There is no way to use a router, hub, or hardware firewall. I share my connection by using ICS through my lan. This distributes the connection to my two other computers. Each one has it's own software firewall to maintain and fiddle with (norton). When I try to browse I get Direcway error 504. I cannot access anypage (including my homepage). Norton support says there can be a problem with "Outbound NetBIOS for both UDP and TCP packets". I followed some steps that they suggested regarding this but the settings were already configured the way they said to do it.

Also, no cable, DSL, or ISDN is available as an alternative to Direway.

Jerry,

I've used Norton products for a number of years without many problems. Although the name varies with the version, you need to find the Internet Access Control or Manual Progam Control and change the program entries one by one to and from Permit/Automatic/Block until you find the program that is causing your problem. At that point you can try to manually configure the firewall for that program or seek further assistance from Norton once you've isolated the problem. Hope this helps.

/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Now that's an understatement!! When I had DirecWay I had to realias my ping command to permit timeouts in the 2-3 second range (2000-3000ms) for East Coast business day times.

Look in your Norton settings to see if TCP Port 80 or 8080 is blocked. They should not be for normal surfing. Try GRC.com (as someone had mentioned above). They make a nice (FREE) software firewall that works great too.

Port addresses, yes, I think you are on to something there. I went back into the settings for ""Outbound NetBIOS for both UDP and TCP packets" and found that many ports were specified. Direcway uses port 83 and port 85. Instead of searching for and verifying the correct ports, I simply checked the box to allow all ports. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Guess what ? ! ! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Now it all works! ! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Now on to my next problem. I have three computers on the network named Oscar, Audrie and Dale.

Oscar can see, read, and modify files on all.
Audrie can see, read, modify files on Audrie and Dale
Dale can see, read, modify files on Dale and Audrie

You will notice that nobody is able to remotely access Oscar. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Audrie is the Direcway host and runs ICS (internet connection sharing). Dale is a client. Oscar is a client.

Oscar - Win2000, 2.5mhz pentium 512meg
Audrie - Win2000, 1.2 mhz AMD, 512 meg
Dale - Win98, 400 mhz pentium, 512 meg

Oscar will not share files. When I try to enable 'file and printer sharing' on the network connection, it spits back an error and says it cannot do it. I will post an image of this message tonight when I get home. How can I make Oscar behave and share his files? /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Any errors in the Event viewer (start, settings, control panel, administrative tools, event viewer)? If the server service doesn't start (you can see if it's running by checking under services in administrative tools), you won't be sharing anything.

Oh yes, now that you mention it, I do remember that the message does say something aobut "server service " but I have no idea what that is or what that does. Computers are so darn complex that you can know enough about one thing to be considered an expert and so little about somethin else that you feel like a dummy. Well, that's my trouble at least. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Oscar also has developed another interesting quirk. When the system starts up it displays a blank command window for a few moments and then it goes away. The heading at the top of the window says c:\winnt\system32\cmd.exe
