I decided to take a chance and put 3 rows of sweet corn (Vision F1) into the ground today. The winter has been so mild and now we are in the 70's/80's for our 3rd week in a row with more to come.

These 3 rows were planted into lush green red winter wheat. After running the planter through, I sprayed roundup over the top of the rows in an 8" wide pass. Once the corn starts to come up, hopefully the taller wheat around the rows will prevent any future frost from hurting the corn.

Once frost fear is gone, I will finish off the rest of the wheat and leave a nice bio mat down to prevent weed growth.

How do you have your 71 planter set for no till? Any pictures? On the farm we have planted over 50 acres of corn so far.

Great idea and please keep us updated on the progress.

My soil temperature at present is 57°F @ 2" depth, 58° @ 4" and 57° @ 12 inches. Would this be maybe ok soil temps. for corn planting? Average last frost date April 15 but this has been a strange year for many areas weather wise.

Generally, I try to get to 70F soil temps at 2".....but it won't stay at 70F at all times, especially this time of year. I am taking a gamble by planting this early, but saw a nearby farmer planted about 200 acres of corn this past Friday so I thought I would try it. I am using up seed from last years purchase, so I am not out anything if it doesn't make it. I'll just wait and replant if necessary.

To early for me, and to wet too, four inches of rain since Thursday. I'll hold out for April 15

I built a custom toolbar that allows me to pull the Flex 71 with the BX2200's shorter ride height, and it's modified Cat1 3-point links. This puts the planter further back from the tractor and also allows it to be lifted higher off the ground. This gives me enough room to mount a 16" 13 wave Yetter Mfg coulter in front of the seed discs. The double disc openers have depth bands set at 2" deep. There is a drag chain behind the closing wheel to pull extra soil into the seed trench. I also set the downforce springs on the second to the lowest setting. Don't need so much down pressure on disc openers since the no-till coulter is tilling up a trench ahead of it.

Currently the wavy coulter runs about 3.5 inches deep.
