Working with my State representative on the recent Native Timber act http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/rural-living/359448-new-law-tennessee-native-timber.html has gotten me inspired to look at other things that can be done to get the govt out of our lives and wallets.

For example, I know Virginia has, or did have when I was a kid living there, a 'farm vehicle' law that allowed you to put FARM VEHICLE on a truck/etc for something used primarily on the farm, or to go to town for farm related business. I think there was a mileage restriction of something like 30 mile radius of the farm. No tag or registration fees were required (if I recall right). Seemed like a very sensible law for vehicles used on public roads very little.

SO, if you have such a law in your State, would you chime in and tell the specifics if you know them and how it works. My next mission is to get this done in Tennessee.

Thanks !

I don't know if Wisconsin has it or not but the thing that ticks me off about this is I have 30 acres and there a local farmer who farms my field about 25 acres and I can't write that off thanks to the liberals in Madison the ta accesser told me.

Wisconsin has farm plates. They cost $45/2 years. Only restriction I'm aware of is that you can't drive to an off-the-farm "job" with them. I've driven my farm truck across the country with them.

Which part of someone farming your field are you trying to"write off"??

SMV sign if it's a dedicated peice of farm machinery and stays under 25mph. Needs brakes and lights .

I am trying to figure out my state of kentucky with trucks marked farm use for tags yet they are obviously log trucks. Some have correct tags now but i think that putting farm use only on side of truck is a bunch of BS.

The field is zoned farming so unless you have a full blown farm you can't get a write off.

Kansas has huge tax breaks for farmers and farm equipment and allows farm trailers to go unlicensed. But remember, somebody else is going to have to pay extra for whatever "break" the "farmer" gets.

Tassie's law is that you don't require a tag as long as you're within 15kms of where it's "garaged". This does not apply to a tractor used for commercial purposes.

When it comes to hay season, the folks I help bring in the crop will come and pick up my tractor on their lorry and transport it to Pyengana... At that point, the tractor is "garaged" there and the 15km radius kicks in. The local constabulary (State) are very lenient in applying the law as they 'know where they live'.

As long as you take reasonable precautions to be visable = SMV placards, 4-way flashers and an amber "woop-woop" light plus be conscious of traffic behind you, you're good-to-go on the roads.

Just went through this in Florida, Department of Motor Vehicles didn't have a clue what the laws were even with me having the documentation and trying to show them where to look to get it, finally they called Tallahassee and they told them my gooseneck trailer would be exempt, then when I broke it to them that I also did not have to pay sales tax on it they didn't believe that either, after another hour or so on the phone I was told 10-4 you were right. I will not try to get out of doing the right thing but if the State says you don't need a tag, then I'm not getting one and on a new trailer purchase as long as it's under 20k you don't have to pay sales tax on it, I'm going to go that route as well.

Tenn. has farm plates. I haven't check on them as to cost. I do believe there is a miles from home thing.
