But I don't know which one or what I'm going to have to pay for it. Intended use is food plots, sweet corn, popcorn, Indian corn, blue corn, whatever. You get the idea.

My first thought was to pick up a 3-point 2-row planter of some sort but given the popularity (and $$) of them, plus the fact that nothing I plant is in the woods, just old fields and the garden, I think a pull-behind (right term?) 4-row would be a better option.

Suggestions? Thanks. -WSJ

SInce the lions share of 2-row AND 4-row planters are older models, stick with a brand and model where you can still get parts if needed. I'd stick with Deere, IH as a distant 2nd, maybe a few models of AC/White, or certain models of Ford planters. A good choice would be the Deere 494/495. There's literally millions of them floating around to this day. Parts are still available, seed plates are the same "type B" plate used in the VERY popular #70/#71 flexplanters, and you'll find a LOT of good technical and moral support, as there's a lot of experienced owners and former owners about.

I started off my years of farming with a 495 Deere, then switched to a 4-row #71 set-up. The 71's are MUCH more forgiving if soil conditions aren't "just so". The older planters needed a very good seedbed and moderate ground speeds to work well. The #70/#71's would plant accurately in just about any conditions and at speeds unheard of with older planters.

I know that you will not be planting high acreage but if you are looking at shoe openers and not disc you might be suprised at the price of them when you go into buy one!
