Engine will start even with fuel line removed so I guess there is fuel in the engine??-

If it pulls gas from the top of the tank then maybe the pickup tube fell off or has a hole in it......or plugged with crap.........

thks- I guess I need to pull the tank out and clean it- there is a little gas in the fuel filter and it will start and run for a few minutes even with the fuel line removed but then it just dies-

Does it have a fuel pump in the tank?

If the fuel pump is on the engine the fuel line has to be connected ...

Check any rubber hoses for pin holes, if engine uses a pump to draw fuel from tank and if there is pin hole in hoses it will not form vacuum to draw fuel.... Also check gas cap to see if it vents tank properly, a plugged vent will cause a vacuum to form in tank and fuel pump may not be able to over come vacuum to draw fuel....AS other have said it couls also be the tank had lost its internal suction tube....

the pump is on the engine- on top of the gas tank is the low fuel sensor and the gas pickup- so does that mean that I should not have gas coming out of the tank with the fuel line off? should I still take apart the tank and check the pickup- as stated I do have some gas in the fuel filter so maybe it is working??- the engine runs for awhile then shuts off- so i thought it was not getting fuel but is there something else I should look for- thks so much

Remove the fuel filler cap and blow air through the gas line BEFORE the pump. You should hear the air bubbling in the tank. If you don't, there's something wrong with the pickup tube. If you hear the bubbling, that line is clear so concentrate your attention from the fuel line to the fuel pump and engine. My guess is the fuel pump. Is it a pulse pump using carburetor vacuum or a pulse off the valve cover? Perhaps the pulse line is rotted or loose.
