I posted this question on the JD forum and I'll include it here. We recently bought 52 acres and we are building a new house. I have looked at both the NH TZ24DA and the JD 2210. Both have comparable engine specs and options. I am looking for any input as to the reliability, build quality and general usage of both these tractors. NH currently has better financing (48 mos. no interest) and is about $300.00 less to buy. Any input is appreciated.

Thanks,

Chaz /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Both should be comparable in value in the long run, but the 4 years free finacing and the 300 now will make the New Holland a lot better value.

But looking at the information that you put up, I would think that the tractors that you are looking at will be to small unless you are just interested in mowing a few acres around the house.

Your profile is not filled out so we do not know where you are coming from, terrain, snow removal, etc.

I will be mowing around 6 acres of lawn and my driveway is about 650 ft long. (gasp) So snow removal is going to be a big concern of mine. I also plan on a decent sized garden and will be adding a tiller and plow to which ever tractor I go with. I am in northern NY, sorry about the lack of profile, I'm a newbie, I will fill it out pronto.

Thanks

Ditto what DUMBDOG said, but I'd also add that the NH has a standard category 1 3pt hitch and it has been said that the JD has a "limited" category 1 3pt hitch.

Now all that said, both tractors are way to small for your needs.

You guys think I should go bigger?? I don't plan on using a FEL or BH for anything, but who know that could change. So really mowing, snow removal and garden tilling and plowing are my main concerns. What models would you suggest?

I would suggest at least a 35HP tractor, once you have a tractor you will find a use for the front end loader. I have a NH1630 which is a 22.5HP at the pto. It was fine when I just had one property of 26 acres, rough cut mowing of 3-4 acres a one acre garden and we are gone in the winter so no 700ft driveway to clear.

I also have a 60 inch tiller, the tractor will handle it, I did till 40 acres with it this spring, but very slowly. It would work a lot better with a larger tractor, so if you have a one acre garden, the 35HP would be better.

As far as the driveway with snow removal goes, the 35 would adequate.

If there is a Kubota dealer nearby, you should check them out, they have some nice financing going on right now, they have a large variety of tractors up to 50HP in the compacts.

30 to 40hp would be my bet. I'd go for a blower instead of a blade for snow, a snowblower will get rid of the snow in less than 1/2 the time of a plow blade. I'd want a 72" mower deck for 6 acres. Your problem is you have more land than you are using but if you ever decide to use that land, then the 30hp tractor will be small.

My question about the 650' driveway is what is it made of? Gravel or asphalt? If it is gravel then you will need to groom it periodically and that would lead me to say anything under a 30hp would be small and 35 to 40 would likely be a nice size. As you go up in size it makes it harder to mow the lawn, so that is where the trade offs really start to appear.

So lets see, I want a smaller lightweight 30hp unit for mowing with a 72" deck, but I want heavier & more powerful (35/40hp) for grooming the driveway. Now maybe I'd opt for a compramise unit, a NH TC33 is a short wheelbase unit that will turn tight to make lawn mowing easier (especially with the SuperSteer option), has a good amount of PTO HP and will power a large mower deck, tiller or snow blower, and has enough drawbar power to pull a decent size box blade.

There, that was easy, I just spent all your money!

I am agreeing with the rest. The tractors you picked out are a bit small. I have two acres, bought a New Holland TC21D and found it was big enought until I figured out I could do more things with a larger tractor. I have a New Holland TC29D and love it. I would look at the New Holland TC33D or larger. Yes I am pro-New Holland but you should also check out the others. This was you won't ever second guess yourself as to which brand you bought.

With that many acres you won't just mow and move snow. In fact you will be living on that tractor.

One thing no one has mentioned is...productivity.

I speak with experience, not authority...so here's my .02

Before I got my first CUT, I had one of those 'rubberband' driven Craftsman rigs. It did the job of mowing and plowing OK, but was not very productive. It took me 2 days to plow out from the "blizzard of '96". One of it's weak links was weight...not enough of it! My first CUT was a TC21D and I plowed with a FEL. It worked great, but I had to make multiple passes to clean up. However, I have a 20 degree slope on part of my 600'x18' driveway. If your driveway is fairly flat, fine, but any substantial slope...you should seriously consider a larger machine. I considered the TC33 when I recently traded in my TC21, but I used my TC21 experience to help decide. I settled on the TC24DA and I know it will do everything I expect it to do.

You mention you have 6 acres of lawn...YIKES!!!...and I thought my 2.5 acres of lawn was a chore!! It used to take me 4 hrs!! Is the 6 acres just field mowing, or is it really a "LAWN"? If it is a lawn, I would consider using a 'gang mower' set up. If not that, then you need at least a 72" or 84" mower, and either of those WILL require a larger tractor. I actually enjoy the 2 hrs it takes to mow, it helps me wind down....I use a 60" MMM(belly mower), but towards the end of the season, it does start to get "old". 'Field' mowing is one thing, but 'finish' mowing is a whole different puppy. Do you plan on finish mowing 6 acres twice a week?? I hope you like seat time /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The other point I want to make, is also about mowing. Part of my front yard has a 25 degree slope. The larger tractors have a higher center of gravity. If you don't have to deal with any steep slopes, fine...but if you do, you NEED to consider that regardless of what brand or size tractor you buy. MY TC21D was very stable(IMO) on my slope, but after using a Ford 2120 recently....NO WAY would I even consider crossing it with a TC33. Up/down is fine, as long as you use 4X4.

Good luck and listen to what all these guys tell you...
Like myself, their input is based on real experiences, not just knowledge, and many of them have alot more of both than me /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I have 5 acres, 300ft drive and a TC24DA. for me its fine most of the time. get at least the TC24 and front end loader. you will find uses for it.
