Anybody know nominal particle size rating and bypass valve rating? It turns out that a bunch of aftermarket filters (including the Motorcraft filter my Escort uses) will work if those numbers match, saving me a long, unpleasant drive.

check fleetguards website, they OEM the NH filtres and I think they would have that posted there.

Thanks for the reply, Tractor Sales Guy, but is anything ever as simple as it should be?

Regarding an aftermarket oil filter to replace the one on my TC24DA:

New Holland and Messick's parts lookups list the New Holland OEM filter as 87415600, formerly SBA140517020. It's supposed to fit a lot of the smaller Boomers, according to the lookup. I can't find specs on either site, which in my experience is the norm with manufacturer-supplied information.

Messick's lookup for a crossover gives Fleetguard LF16011. But Fleetguard gives that filter's BPV setting as 28.6 psi, more than three times as high as the figures I get from other sources for that tractor.

Fleetguard lookup using the tractor model gives LF3795, which is almost an inch larger in diameter and lists a BPV setting as 22.04 psi (as if the manufacturing process was anywhere near that precise). On the specs page for that filter Fleetguard says it replaces New Holland 86546618, which New Holland's webparts lookup cannot find.

The Wix crossover lookup, more reliable in my experience, gives 51516 or the shorty version, 51056, for the tractor. That filter's BPV setting is 8-11 psi (that precision sounds more realistic to me), which is about what I get from a few other filter manufacturers' crossover searches.

Naturally Motorcraft doesn't give specs for the FL400S, which is back-referenced on some lookups as replaced by the same filter as the one on the TC24DA. (That's supposed to be a Purolator and I went there, but I have to stop now because my eyes are falling out. When did I quit making sense?)

This is the kind of infuriating crap I expect to run into when I'm looking for something like this from virtually any online source.

I guess I should have just ordered the NH filter from Messick's, which I shall now do. But it would be nice to know the specs ....

Thanks for putting up with this.

Hi,

I think for the price I paid for my equipment, I would have Neil send me two or three OEM NH filters from messicks UPS and be done with it. This way there are simply no issues with having the filter that belongs on the tractor filtering the oil in it.

Not the Sugarloaf in Luzerne County? I always thought that was one of the world's best place names. (There are a lot of other Sugarloafs so I guess some folks agree.)
Yeah, I'm going to order OEM filters -- still, it just shouldn't be so difficult to find this out.

Just curious? Why do you care? I'm an engineer and I've never looked at specs like this except when I'm designing things. I always use OEM, Wix or fleetguard recommeded filters and never would trust my $15,000 engines to some filter that just happens to fit. What about internal bypasses, etc, etc.

I remember reading about the NH filters, and they filter down to an extremely small particle size due to the use of a synthetic filter medium. Can't recall the exact size. I use the NH dealer filters.......the NAPA are more $$$, and the motorcraft fit, but don't have any real data on them about filter medium for my TC48. We're talking about a few bucks, vs a $4K engine.

OK, thanks guys. Got OEM filters from Messick's and wrote Fleetguard off as a brand I might buy. I still feel CNH should publish those numbers.
Got a New Holland fuel filter too. Made in China. Full of lead, no doubt.

I agree with stocking with the oem stuff. Messicks prices are pretty good. For a couple of bucks extra I will stick with oem. I came to this dilemma with the hydraulic oil. I needed some and the dealer was closed for the weekend. I thought about going to Tractor Supply or Wal-Mart to get it. After talking to my neighbor, he said that when he used a off brand oil in his John Deere that his hydraulics were all messed up. He drained it and put in oil from the JD dealer. His problems went away.

When you consider the price and how often you have to change oil and filters, I am sticking with the oem stuff, except for the engine oil.

Messicks has gone to an engine oil filter for the New Holland compacts named, Sure-Fit. Anyone know anything about these engine oil filters? Who makes them?
I'm now thinking of purchasing the Cummings Fleet Guard LF16011, or the FG LF3795. How much difference does the BPV number matter?
