Looking at buying a round baler at the end of this season..maybe from someone throwing in the towel after this drought...and was wondering about which model of a used NH baler would be worth taking a look at (looking for a 4x5 and probably net wrap but that is not a must, it just seems like more and more people are wanting the wrap these days). Baled about 2k bales or more every year with a NH 654 and that was a pretty good baler that had its quirks, but it spit the bales out. would a BR740 be something like what I'm looking for - or is there another model or two out there. Not going to spend over $10k and of course the least amount as possible. (may look at a JD but not a Vermeer.)

I am a NH baler guy...
My dad sold them for over 30 years...
With that said, used balers in decent shape are expensive...
I would look for one with low hours and kept in a shed and well maintained...
Tractor house and machinery trader will give you an idea on prices...
Rick B would be the guy on here that could give you the best advice on specific models...
He works for a NH dealership...

644, 648, BR740, BR740A would be New Holland 4x5 balers in order of age that would be likely to be within your budget. Any of these models could be excellent balers or your worst nightmare dependent on the condition of the actual baler being considered. The same could probably be said for any 4x5 Deere or Vermeer built in the same timeframe if you are baling dry hay only. Silage balers need a little more discussion.

Thanks for the replies...couple of other questions if yall dont mind
No silage baling...
I did some quick googling and didnt find any specs that I could really put my hands on concerning required HP for these balers... I have a TN75 4wd (think it is little bit over 60ish pto hp)...the 654 we used to have we baled with a 90hp tractor (80 pto). with these being slightly smaller, what can I get by with---or is one of the above balers any easier on the tractor than the other? ground is not hilly at all - typical flat pasture ground.

guessing that all the above can be retro-fitted for net wrap?

60-ish PTO HP will run a NH 4x5 baler on flat or nearly flat ground. I ran a brand new BR740 quite a bit a few years back on an IH 686 (+-70 PTO HP)and it snorted on the hills with a near-full bale but ran it fine otherwise.
Don't plan on adding net to a NH baler. You want net, buy the baler with it. Absolutely NOT cost effective or practical to add.
Muy biggest concern with round baling with a TN75 would be the limited ground clearance for big windrows. Hope you have 30" R-1 rears.

didnt even think about ground clearance -- always took that for granted. got the 16.9x30 rears and 11x24 somethings on the front...do have ballast in the rears...its a decent lil tractor, serves a purpose. found a 644 that is local, but guy just put it on the market and is asking $7k for it(think auto wrap and wide pickup but that is it)...i dont have any other info on it other than it is a baler. does look like from the pic that it has sat outside - from price checking online - he's about in the middle of the range on these balers...but for the time of the year and so on and so on...i think he's a little high on it...
anyway - thanks again to everyone
