Nh 492 Haybines

Can anyone tell me if the NH 492's haybines are a good machine?

hist, I don't ever really hear anything bad about them and they are very popular. Like most machines, how it's been treated and maintained will have as much to do with how good it is as the color of the paint on it. Cutter bar, rollers, looks of the mechanicals, etc.

We had a 489, which is the older brother of the same machine(492s had hydraulic tongue options that the 489 didn't). They are a great machine if you can find one in good shape. The floating head does a nice job of following the ground contour and getting all the hay you grow. We went literally years without breaking a knife and never broke a guard on ours. Pay attention to the amount of torque on the header springs- there are torque specs in the owner's manual to help you set it up correctly.
