Tractor
NH 3040 "Boomer"
I just purchased a 2011 NH 3040 tractor. The dealer was a JD dealer and doesn't know about NH operation.
Whatever range I drive in seems to have a speed governor. When I get to a certain speed point, the speed drops back
and then will not go any faster. I read the manual and read that each gear has speed maximums and that by adjusting
you can increase the speed range to 100% of that gears maximum range. I adjusted from the 60% that it was set at to 100%. It doesn't seem
to have made a difference. Third gear is supposed to have a maximum 30 mph, I am lucky if I can get 13mph. It seem like
it will race up to 18mph and then back down to the 13mph.
What do I need to do to avoid the drop back in speed? Thanks for your help!

You need to identify your transmission. Is it shuttle (gears), HST, or CVT?

BTW: If you don't have a manual, where did you get that 30 mph? The JD dealer? My HST model TC45D (similar to a 3045) will only go about 14 mph in the top range. I think whoever gave you 30 mph was pullin' your leg. 13 mph sounds reasonable.

Like Jinman I would be interested as well as knowing where the 30 mph came from. I suspect from your description you have a CVT transmission. Max speed on my Boomer 8N with CVT is 18.6 mph which is the same powertrain as the 3050. I bet that's close to yours as you have 10 HP less. The three speed ranges are default set to a percentage of max speed. Low is 30%, Medium is 60% and High is 100%. The Medium speed range is programmable from 5-100% thru the ADIC. In Low the first 25% of pedal is for inching operations. FYI Cruise control only works in High range, took me a while to figure that out.

When the speed drops off does the rpm stay the same? Try the same test using cruise control and report back.

Many times when you are accelerating and the governor kicks in, there is a feeling you are slowing as the inertia on your body is felt as you level off in speed. My Kawasaki Mule will scream up to 25 mph and then it feels like it slows down as the governor kicks in quickly.

18 mph is scary fast even when driving on a fairly flat paved road, especially when you have to dart a wheel on the shoulder once and awhile. Add to that an open station, bouncing up and down on your springy seat, a 30 year old kind of loosy goosey steering, and you will thank the Lord you can't hit 30. :)

Sorry , I misread the manual. The top speed is 30Km/h or 18.6mph. I haven't had a change to try the tractor after resetting the speed ranges.
It has a CVT transmission. Thanks for the responses

No problems, just enjoy the tractor. I use low and high for mowing. I mow in low if I am not on preset cruise. It goes up to 5 mph and the inching is nice around obstacles. I shift to high to use cruise for mowing pastures. My preset cruise is at 3 mph, any faster and my back hurts the next day:). A good pair of noise cancelling headphones connected to my Ipod and I am a happy camper.

On my 3050 with CVT II the regular cruise control function works in all 3 speed ranges but the "Pre-set" cruise control only works in speed range 3. What I like about the CVT transmission is that you can manually set the engine rpm's to what ever you like then choose the speed range to match the job you are performing. As torque is needed the CVT will quickly and quietly change ratios and never miss a beat. I have used manual and HST transmissions all my life and at first the CVT seemed strange but once I figured out how it works it has been flawless in operation.
PS- The computer function of lowering the maximum engine speed in any range is there I believe just to keep younger children or the inexperienced from getting dangerous with the tractor. If you are in a situation where only mature folks use the unit I personally would program the tractor to attain 100% rpm's in all ranges.
