John Deere 4100
I just bought a JD 4100 hst with 410 FEL with teeth and a 54" mmm. The machine has 670 hours on it. I have done countless hours of research on this site and many others before deciding to make this choice in machines. I also just bought 24 acres on wich i will be using the 4100. The JD came with turf tires on it, I tried to work some R4`s into the deal of 10400.00 but got teeth for the FEL instead. A JD dealership told me I would need to change out only the rear wheels to switch it to R4s at $484.00 then another $600.00 for tires. Is there anyone out there that have been in this situation? Did I get a good deal on the machine. Can anyone give some advice to a nieve newbie?

I've a 4010 with Titan turfs, a little over 250 hours. These tires are tough.

The R4s might be better with the loader; however, I've loaded and hauled about 22 tons of gravel plus gobs of mulch with mine and have had no trouble loading with turfs. It's mainly a technique thing of how you curl and move forward at the same time. I've also done some dirt work with the FEL and toothbar. This is the only time where some added push with other kinds of tires would have helped. My experience with R1s on my Gravely vs. turfs is the R1s just dig. Turfs gave more grip in most situations.

I think you did OK on the price. I do think it's too small for 24 acres (depending on what you intend to do with the property and how much acreage you intend to work).

I also think the dealer was mistaken about the conversion to R-4 tires, if I read your post correctly. You'd need to change out front and rear tires, but I'm not sure about the wheels on all four corners.

To use that loader effeciently, you'll want adequate rear ballast. Deere sells ballast boxes for about $200, but you can probably get a used one considerably cheaper (I paid $90 for mine...and it had never been used) or rig something else up. You'll want 500-700 lbs back there to ensure adequate traction.
Also, pump up those front tires to 23-25 psi!

You're not too far from me, BTW...I'm just outside of Red Lion. In fact, I think I know the property you bought (although it was being advertised as being north of Dover).

Welcome to TBN and the wonderful world of green tractors!

Thanks for the reply guys. The main reason I was looking to change tires is that my lot has a lot of brush and briers, I was thinking that the R4s would hold up a little better from punctures. I have talked to several dealerships about the conversion and have gotten conflicting answers. I do realize that the machine is small for 24 acres but I do need a smaller machine for most of the work I intend on doing. For bigger jobs I plan on renting a machine intended for the purpose. I will do mostly mowing, light brush clearing, and light loader work. The lot has a 1 acre pond about 4 acres of grass and rest is all woods. I was thinking of getting a sickle bar for the banks around the pond, any comments are most certainly welcome and appreciated. To my friend and neighbor in Red LIon, The lot is on Old York Road about 5 miles past Rossville, Pa. Behind the old Lerews Farm Market. I dreamed of owning this land since I was a teen, It took twenty years and one **** of a wife to make it happen.

Logme13,

Congratulations on the purchase of your dream property. Good for you! I too have a 4100 and have been interested in the very issues you have raised in connection with your tires.
