Tractor
1979 ford 1300
first of all i'd like to wish everybody a merry Christmas.
here is my question: i bought a 1979 ford 1300 2wd tractor with shibaura 2 cyl diesel engine 3 weeks ago and i attempt to do my first cold start this morning with no success . (after the light of the glowplugs is ok do i have to push the throttle wide open before cranking or let the throttle close).

I leave it close...but you should invest in a block heater, winters are harsh in Québec.
Your engine and battery will thank you !
Merry Christmas to you also

Some diesels start better with the throttle open half way or even more...

I agree, get a block heater.

For sure get a battery tender and if necessary a block heater. Also you may not be glowing it enough. Sometimes you may need to glow it three times. Don't glow it too long, for sure not more than 30 seconds each time.. I would try 15-20 seconds each time. I think each tractor is different though with regard to glow intervals. If it is really cold.. like 10 or below. I wouldn't even think of starting my tractor without glowing it 3 times for 15 seconds each.

Another thing I forgot to mention...be sure you have winter blend diesel, otherwise regular diesel turns to gel in cold weather.

Merry Christmas and congrats on the new tractor. The xx00 series Shibaura compacts are some really heavy duty machines that will last a long time.

Just a couple of points for you based upon my experience with my Ford 1700 - big brother to yours:

The throttle should be open, but not wide open and definitely NOT closed. Closed shuts off the fuel on mine. I believe yours is the same. Also, you may need to cycle the glow plugs a few times as mentioned. There should be a window where you can verify that the glow plugs are getting power - a little coil of wire that glows red hot when plugs are heating. It takes a while to get it to glow, so be patient. Also, never use ether as a start aid. Your machine will become dependent on it. My father has a Ford 1900 and lives in Ohio and his struggles to start when the temp is less than 30 degrees. Keeping the tractor in an attached garage or semi-sheltered will help. My 1700 always starts in our moderate climate. Coldest i've tried is maybe 25 degrees. I have a 750 cca battery and healthy glow plugs.

Good luck.
