hi -- I am from New Hampshire and i am looking at a m5700 -- dealer wants $26580 -- is that a good price? loader is a LA1002 for $4750. i am also considering a BH9000 backho for a quoted price of $9150. any comments?

Is it worth stepping upto the 6800?

I loved using the automatic shuttle transmission otherwise I would consider a M4900.

I am not going to be sitting in it 8 hours a day so I can't quite justify the $7000 cab that the dealer quoted? any 3rd market options?

tractor is going to be used to manage a very steep and hilly 130 acre wood lot with about 10 acers of rolling meadow. I will be doing a lot of brush hogging, and some light dragging of logs, trail maintenance, etc.

thanks in advance for any help that anyone can provide

Hello jkahan,

The Montana 5740C is a great tractor with all standard features where others will charge as options. I would talk to some of the 5740C owners here on the forum to see what they think.

This is a phenominal tractor that would be an excellent alternative in my opinion. There is a dealer in New Boston who you may want to contact if that is close to you.

If you have any other questions about the Montana from owners try the Other Tractors forum as there are many of them there.

Thanks,
Maka

I purchased the M5700 several years ago (still have 23 payments left) with the FEL & cab. Price was 34K at that time. I have 81 acres of woods with about 6 acres of field that has a bout a 25* grade. When they delivered the tractor, the dealer took one look at my property and took the tractor back to the shop to extend the wheels all the way out. I ripped my field with a rake last spring without much problem, but I had to be careful not to turn while on a steep part of the field. I feel pretty comfortable going up or down, but anything approaching 15* sideways scares the **** out of me.
I also had the Woods 9000 backhoe with the undercarridge o the tractor frame set up. I think thats better than the 3 point hitch set up. I traded the bachhoe in for a mini excavator. The backhoe worked great but was pretty crowded working with a cab.
The M5700 has a 5 cyl diesel & the M 6800 a 3 cyl. From what I have heard, most go for either the M4900 or the M6800. I don't spend 8 hours in the seat either but the cab is a great feature. I would have eaten a ton of dust ripping that field without it. A neighbor recently traded in his Kubota fora a new one with a cab. Might help if you run into a hornets nest also. Good Luck.

thanks for the info -- really appreciate it -- what a great resource.
4900 would be a smarter buy, but i am getting emotionally attached to the hydrolic shuttle on the 5700. 6800 is more than i need.

The M4900 and M5700 are essentially the same tractor. The lifting capacities, hydraulic pump GPM, etc., specs are about (if not) the same. The M5700 has slightly larger tires giving it just a bit more ground clearance and the motor turns at a higher RPM giving a little more HP. You really aren't getting more tractor for your money by buying a M5700 over the M4900. If your dealer is giving you a M5700 for the price of a M4900 - then it is well worth it. Otherwise you aren't getting anything but a couple more PTO hp for your extra money.

If you think you might need a bigger tractor then a M4900, seriously consider moving to a M6800. The M6800 is a 4 cylinder machine, not 3.

Four months ago, we bought a M6800, MFWD, hydraulic shuttle shift, canopy, two sets of remotes, FEL w/quick attach, skid-steer bucket w/teeth, and ag tires for $31,000.

Hi jkahan,

I was looking at the M5700 as well because I was looking for a cab tractor. The dealer only had a M6800 on the lot and I decided to try that. I was told the M6800 M8200 and M9000 have a much larger frame than the M5700 on down. Look at the specs and you'll find the weight considerable higher. Well I fell in love and I'm taking it home Saturday morning. I also have a used 1996 woods 9000 hoe. Unbelieveable machine.
I would say that the price you got was decent. I am in New Hampshire and I was quoted 10,250 last year for a new 9000 before I found the 1996 model for 4000.00 through this forum. I am trading in my L3130 because I didn't want to spend the extra money on a cab tractor at the time. Should have spent the money then. It would have been a heck of a lot cheaper. Think about it carefully. Good luck

The Woods 9000 backhoe seemed very capable, although it was the only one I had ever used so I have nothing to compare it to. It was just a little cramped working with it on tha cab equipped tractor, but it certainly did the job. I think all the products made by Woods are quality. The 9000 was certainly enough machine for anything I needed it to do, which was mainly digging out tree stumps.

thanks again for all the great info -- i'm leaning towards spending the extra money on the cab regardless of the M model that I end up with .. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
