Newbie, JD 790 Opinions needed

Thanks ahead of time to anyone that throws a thought in here.

I am totally new to tractors of all sizes. Never had one, never run one. Haven't found anything I couldn't run, but this is new to me.

Am looking at a used JD 790. Seems like it is too good a deal, so I would like some opinions on it. Here is the owners description:

"2005 JOHN DEERE 790 Compact Tractor with Loader. This machine has 476 hours on it and has been used primarily for snow plowing and grading my gravel driveway. It is equipped with 4X4, 27 HP Direct Injected Diesel, 8 forward & 2 reverse speeds, R4 Industrial Tires, Dual SCVs, Power Steering, Live Rear PTO Also Includes 300x Loader with Quick Attach Bucket. The tractor is in extremely good shape."

He has it priced at least half what anyone else I have seen. Is there something in this description that is wrong? What catastrophic damage or flaw should I be looking for? I just can't see how he can be serious. When he first posted this I immediately asked if the price was correct. Got no response to four emails, but ad came down two days later. Now it is back up again in identical format, same price after two days.

The pictures show an almost perfect machine. There is another one in the back ground of two pics and a gator. So I wonder if he is rebuilding blown machines. Even if that was the case, half price still seems too low.

I'm feeling a cliche here, or at least Murphy's Law. Could this be an internet Bot? Someone posting just to keep people on the site? Bogus machine?

I think a new 790 with 300 loader and 4wd is about $15,000. Is he/she is asking $7500 and it looks and runs good it seems like a good deal to me. I have a 790 and really like the tractor.

Dealer in Indianapolis (Reynolds) is selling a used 790 4WD with (419?) FEL and 276 hrs for for $10,495.00 USD. The tractor looks good. I thought that was a pretty good price for a 790 (not sure what year) with less than 300 hours.

I'd wager you saw this on eBay or Craigslist...something of that nature.

If that's correct, and the price is that low...it's probably a scam, so use caution.
If the machine is local...go look at it. Take some cash with you because, if it's the real deal, it won't last long.

790's are simple no-frills tractors...

I've had a 790 for 1 1/2 years. great tractor. my primary problem is the weight. there is way more power than there is traction. also the front end is light without a loader. you may need weights if you're not working on virtually level ground. i have never stalled the tractor. i think if you sat it against a tree in gear engine idling, the tires would wear our before the thing would stall. if i had it to do over again i would have gotton a 990, ow well the wife can use the 790 when i get my 990. a virtual fuel sipper, less than a gallon per hour at heavy work, great starting in cold weather. sorry for rambling. price seems really good.

Hi Roy, Most likely any tractor listed at a ridiculously low price on craigslist etc. it's a scam..be careful, don't give out any personal info.

I just flag em and move on..they're usually gone in a day, but not because someone got a great deal. They're gone cause the ad was pulled by craigslist .etc.

It is a "local" machine, that is why I ask about the likelihood of there being something very wrong with it that would make him sell it low. It is being offered in our local buy and sell. So I can't be sure. If it was Ebay or Craiglist, I would ignore it as a scam, no thought required.

I will be going to see it if he actually tells me where he is. I'll go even if it is a bit of a drive. A really good deal on a machine this size is not something I can pass up. I don't have a budget for anything like this otherwise.

I have contacted the webmaster for the buy and sell to check on this. They immediately responded wanting to know which ad this was. Makes me wonder a little more.

You can always contact the owner...if he says the tractor is in Timbuktoo or something like that (meaning it is not a local machine), odds are it's a scam.
Just do not give out any personal or financial infomation.

Sound advise which I am already following. I was looking for a scam the instant I saw the ad. 50% of the low end used is too low. Funny thing is that I have tried to contact the person to at least pull out the scam to expose, but they have not responded at all. They even didn't take the implication of a cash deal as good enough to respond. lol I guess they will stay safe if it is a scam. At least from me that is.
