Hi all.

This is my first post here. I have have a new kubota BX2670 and a couple of attachments. FEL, 54 MMM with mulch kit, block heater, and a Landpride 5 ft rear blade.
After reading my manuals and scouring youtube, forums and mr google I am still left with a couple of questions. I have never had a "Tractor" before moving to this property.

So naturally I came here :)

I have 2 acre property all cleared and all able to be mowed. My drive way is a combination of pavers and ashpalt (20 x 75 ish) I also have a simplicity regent lawn tractor that I use for mowing too.

I replaced my steal blade with a Ultra high molecular weight plastic (UHMW) construction (plastic blade used on ATV's) as to prevent scraping on my driveway and plan on getting rollers for the back from big league lawns for striping.

Well thats about it for me so my questions.

1. I have learned about the float position for the FEL and tried it out on the roadway. However, I have only seen it used in videos on flat ground. My driveway has about 15% slope. Before I gave it a go Would it still work fine? My thoughts are that I would only have to worry about the angle of the blade so as to not tear up the driveway with it in float position. If I keep it slightly up, it should follow the slope, no?

2. The rear blade. I replaced my steal blade with a Ultra high molecular weight plastic (UHMW) construction (plastic blade used on ATV's) as to prevent scraping and tearing up my driveway. I plan to have it angled off to the side and have a place to dump the snow with the FEL if needed. I'm a bit confused as to if I should have my blade facing backwards as I have seen in a few videos (tractor still going forward)? I also am not sure what angle the blade should be at. i.e.., the top part of the 3ph bar? Should it be angled forward, back, upright etc?

3. Mower deck. I still need to go get the JD measureing tape I have seen on here to make sure it is set up right. However, my anti scalp wheels are always on the ground when set according to the manual. Ie., I have the dial set to 3 inch so I have the wheels at position C. The problem I see is that my anti scalp wheels are rolling on the lawn all the time. I'm not sure why this is. The manual says that there should be about 6mm-13mm clearance. When I put the mower down I put the hydraulic control leaver all the way down. Am I supposed to use that to keep it just off the ground? I thought for some reason that when I put it all the way down that the deck would still be suspended since I have it set to 3 inch.

Not sure if I explained things well as this is all new to me. Looking forward to your help along the way :)

Welcome to TBN! You've come to the right place.

1) Float. On my pavement I angle down a couple degrees. Once I get to the lawn I flatten it out to not gouge the lawn. At the edge of the lawn I have a slight slope up and I do angle up some to smoothly let it rise. I wouldn't curl back if you want to clean well. The float itself will allow it to rise relative to the tractor.

2) Blade. I just got mine also. My intent is to swing it to one side and catch the spill from the few and clean that side so I don't have to keep cleaning after cleaning if you know what I mean.

3) Mower. Is the weight of mower on the wheels or are they just spinning from the grass? You should be able to determine this if you park on a concrete pad and lower it down. 6mm is not a large measurement.

You will need to practice with the float feature of the loader, and be warned that you can make a pretty big mess in a really short time so go slow and check frequently! The slope shouldn't really matter.

I use my rear blade angled to the side and facing forward but I am on pavement. If you have pavers then backwards would be less aggressive and less likely to damage the pavers. I don't think it will move snow nearly as efficiently and create the nice "windrow" effect. You definitely don't want to run the blade straight, it will clog up behind you.

The deck may not be adjusted right. The wheels should not touch all the time on flat hard surfaces but they may touch when mowing more than not. You are definitely supposed to push the lever until the deck goes all the way down. It should suspend itself at the height set by the knob. Make sure the air pressure in the tires is correct and set the deck up as per the instructions. It's a pain to do but you get a better cut that way.

Good luck and have fun!

As a BX owner myself I agree with all advise given above...My MMM wheels are a good 1/2" off the ground on concrete but spin constantly when mowing at 3.25"..They roll on the grass as designed, preventing scalping should you hit and abrupt hump in the turf.

Thanks for your help.

As for the blade I'm going to move it so it angels to the side, and then move it so it faces forward. (I'll have to shorten the top link in the 3ph).

The mower..Well when I have the lever all the way down it is on the concrete garage floor. Just to be clear then….when you guys push your mower to the ground on level floor i.e. concrete their IS space between the rollers and the floor? So it is suspended and the wheels flow freely? Probably something I'm going to have to look in the future.

Mine are completely on the ground and seem to be pushing hard into the ground.

Thanks

Your Dealer should have set that up. You paid for that so it should be done for you.

Welcome to the forums! On your questions:

1. As already mentioned, your float function will allow the loader bucket to "ride" with the slope. If the bucket is tilted down it will scrape along on a hard surface, but can allow it to dig in otherwise.

2. I have used my back blade in reverse position, pulling forward, to move snow to the side (blade angled.) It seemed to work pretty decent, but I've only experimented with it in a couple of light fluffy snow falls of a few inches each. On the paver portion of your driveway, I'd be a bit hesitant to pull the blade in the normal forward facing direction for fear of catching your paver edges and doing some damage. If you do, you could do some testing with adjusting the cutting edge to the least aggressive angle with the top link as you mentioned.

Another thing you could try, which I've seen mentioned in a number of threads, is to cut a piece of ABS pipe the length of your blade. Then slice a narrow gap down the length of it and slide the ABS on to your blade edge. I've not tried it, but many say you can use your blade in the forward direction to maximize it's plowing action, but also get better protection from blade gouging.

3. Your mower gauge wheels should not be on the ground on your flat concrete surface - there should be a slight gap. When you drop the mower all the way, the mower should be suspended slightly above the floor, off the wheels.

... and plan on getting rollers for the back from big league lawns for striping.

I'd be really interested to see what you come up with for your lawn striping. Please be sure to post about that if you don't mind!

For me float works best when back dragging. In other words, the bucket down in float driving backwards. I put a rubber edge on my metal blade so it wouldn't damage my driveway.

Thanks for the info gang.

For the rear blade I took off the metal piece and added this:
Warn Industries - Plow Accessories: Plastic Wear Bar

It's basically hard plastic. I think the ABS pipe would have been a cheaper route though ;)

As for the lawn striping.
Simple Installation ~ Dramatic Effects! - YouTube

They have a 3ph version and one that could attach to the frame. I was thinking about putting quick release pins on it for when I'm not using it.

I have a simplicity tractor too which has a free floating deck with rollers behind it. It gives it a golf cut appearance with striping. I started looking and found these guys. Since winter is coming, I haven't ordered it yet and would love to hear your thoughts on it.

Cheers
