I see it all the time. People talking about proper ballast. I have the rear tires on my BX loaded and thought that was good enough even though I have read different.

A couple of weeks a half assed added some weights to a draw bar. It helped but I ordered a weight box. Do not know the total weight of the box but maybe 250 pounds. It cost a little over $200.

What a big difference. It is not just a safety thing either. The tractor rides better with a loaded bucket. Less of the rocking back a forth. It just sits on the back axle better.

So if you think you need rear weight. You probably do.

What weight box did you buy and what did you fill it with?

I think a weight box should be mandatory for FEL use. It really helps to take the weight off the front axle.

Got it off Amazon. Filled it with weight lifting weights and about 8 old disc brake rotors.

Weight on the three point is MUCH more effective than loaded tires, wheel weights, etc. when using a FEL because the weight is behind the rear axle and serves as a counterweight.

Of course, one can simply leave a heavy implement on the three point, but such implements tend to get in the way when doing FEL work. Hence, the attractiveness of a weight box.

I have two, a large one for use with my M9960 and L6060 and a small one for use with my B3350.

I filled them both with playground sand from Lowes. Of course, I left the sand in the plastic bags. Hopefully, the bags will not deteriorate quickly.

I went this route adjustable from 60 lbs to 500 lbs, Land Pride QH10, Heavy Hitch weight bar/hitch receiver, Kubota suitcase weights, Heavy Hitch weight cart for easy on/off with the Land Pride quick hitch. Note the Kubota suitcase weights on a Heavy Hitch weight bar will not fit the lower priced light duty Land Pride QH05 due to the arched Land Pride design on the QH05, note how far the weights extend forward from the weight bar.

Are you still happy with your Heavy Hitch Weight Cart? I am looking at it for my B2601's dual offset rack Heavy Hitch. Also at their new heavy duty cart, which costs $100+ more. I think the regular duty would work, but I may have to keep it outdoors so it needs durability. I don't have enough cement or level ground to offer it much more protection than a tarp on my flattest gravel spot.

Also, I don't want it falling over if I have only one side of my hitch loaded. Normally I load the inner rack closest to the tractor with six 41 lb. weights. Somewhere I got the impression this unbalance would cause the cart to topple over, and I'd have to put some weights on the back rack to balance things. But the person I spoke to today at Heavy Hitch said that shouldn't be a problem.

I'd appreciate any insight from Heavy Hitch Weight Cart owners. My own attempt to make a 2x4 stand has not worked . . . It DOES topple!

Oh, and I see where I got the idea that weights are necessary on both racks of my dual hitch. The Heavy Hitch web site says for the standard cart:
  • Dual bracket hitch, but load must be balanced with an equal amount of weight on each side of hitch
This is NOT what users typically say or picture with the standard cart. AND their web site says the same thing for the HD cart.

I agree, a ballast box positions the weight back where it's most helpful and makes a noticeable difference. What I like about the box vs other ballast such as a rear blade, land plane, (or heaven forbid a cutter:eek:) is the tractor is still maneuverable in tight areas. Plus it's a good place to carry your stuff like loppers, saw, shovel, etc.

I opted for the Kubota factory box as I was able to get with my B2601 in a package deal. Used 1-1/2" and 2" PVC pipes for tool holders and poured concrete around it. Weighs around 600 lbs or so and when not using it resides on a furniture dolly modified with 2x6; rolls around the garage fine and makes it super easy to connect. A must use for any loader operation and really a difference maker in pushing snow.
