I see so many posts here from guys looking for some help with selecting the right Cub for a particular application, I just have to throw in one other option. That would be the used Cub market

I've owned six Cubs, a 149, an 1862, an 1860 an 1872 and a 5252 and the only tractor I bought new was the 5252. The only Cub to receive factory service has been the 5252 because it's under warranty.

I bought the 1872 with a 60" deck and 54" hydraulic front blade for $2000 and have only had some minor repairs in the last two years.

The most difficult repair was replacing the ignition module on the 1860 that requires pulling the engine, not that difficult, just a lot of labor.

My point is that you may want to consider these older full blown garden tractors, they are such great workhorses!

I have had a number of them in the 800 to 900 hour range with no signs of deterioration whatsoever.

I asked the tech at the local dealership how many hours I could expect to get from a Kohler Magnum and he said he's seen then with 2000 to 3000 hours and still going strong.

There is a great comfort level in the two year warranty offered on new tractors, but there is no free lunch.

Used is a smart way to go if you can find a good used machine, and have a decent amount of cash at hand. Good used GT's always seen to be a tough find in my area (WNY/Buffalo area). They are there, but could take awhile to locate. Dealers seem to have much of the good 'used' and want a premium for it. The credit & financing offers also make buying new the only way to go for some buyers.
