Greetings all. I'm yet another guy looking for the first tractor. Tired of the hassles of renting 1-2 times a year, even if it makes $$$ sense. A tractor with a FEL certainly would help maintenance aroung he horse corals, etc. Plus, do some pasture mowing a few times per year (if we ever get a decdent amount of rain). Currently have 5 acres, so I don't need a very big rig.

Local dealers have the following offerings:

NH: TC 30 MFWD gear with NH loader. $15,000 cash, 16,200 if finance (NH is might pround of their loader $$$ wise)

JD - 790 MFWD gear with loader for $15,200

Kubota. L2800 MFWD gear with loader $15,600 (JD & Kubota same dealer)

Mahindra: 2615 MFWD gear w/ loader $14,500. 3525 2wd gear w/ loader $15,000

Mahindra dealer also has a used 2004 2015 MFWD gear with loader, 160 hours for $10,600, which also includes a 5' brush hog. Unit is a custoemr consignment. Just serviced.

Originally had been looking for a nice used unit. Not much available in the compact tractor segment. Lots more to choose from in the mid sized 40-60 hp range, but that is physically a larger size than what I really need. The used 2015 is tempting me. Very nice shape. Says owner is firm on the $10,600, although he thinks it is a little high. If I buy from owner, no sales tax, so that saves about $600. Mahindra won't have the sales value that a main brand has - but Mahindra does not seem to be listed in appraisal guides to verify what any difference may be. It may not be great buy, but probably a no-complaint one either. Close enough to where I live I can just druve it home. I myself have not color/brand loyalty. Just want a good solid tractor.

It's easy to pay $8K for a 10-20 year old CUT. And I would rather not spend $15K if I do not have to. Any thoughts from those with more experience than I? Thanks very much, Gary

That 5000$ cheaper used unit is looking pretty good.

I bought both of my 'newish' tractors as used ones from the dealer.. got many thousands off..

Give it a test drive.. if it runs out.. it soulds like it is a good 'package' for you.

If you like the Mahindra 3525, then work on that dealer... the $15000 price is a little high... he can do better. I paid $14000 for mine, delivered, back in August. Probably the most tractor per dollar that you can find when buying new. I absolutely love mine.

If you are kind of handy, change your own oil starter alternator, ect look at the Jinma 284. Its 28 HP 4 wheel drive. I bought one 4 years ago to replace a Ford 800 and love it. I average about 125 hours per year. I got mine assembled (you can get them in a crate), loader, and 6' finish mower for $9500 new. Parts are easier to get than my Ford ever was. Not that its needed many parts. I have replaced the thermostat, oil pressure sending unit, and the horn button due to failures. I have broken a few other parts due to my learning curve. It has been a good machine for me and its a snow plowing beast. They are a little on the heavy end. Tractor weighs 3003#, loader 875#, and I have weight box on the front and rear wheel weights plus rears filled for a total of about 5000#. I find that good, mine will out pull my neighbors 35hp JD any day of the week and he calls me when the snow is 10" or deeper. I pulled shrubs out that his tractor just spun the wheels on.

You can get them with shuttle shift or dual transfer cases for low end grunt which is what I wanted for pulling stumps and stuff like that.

Make sure you look at a good dealer. If you let me know where you are at I can point you in the right direction. Many dealers are shade tree operations. Like any machine they need to be assembled properly and test run then all the fluids changed and gone over again before delivery.

I have a Mahindra 2015 gear drive with loader, Woods B-70X Backhoe, and 5 foot King Kutter hog. I could not be happier. I does what ever I ask it to do. It handles the 5 foot cutter in almost all circumstances, but occasionally I have to take smaller bites in the high thick stuff. It will far exceed your expectatons for a 20HP tractor.

Mahindra makes a nice machine - if the 2015 can lift and move what you need it to, the $4000 that you're not spending will buy a lot of implements to go with that brush cutter. (also keep in mind that depending on brand and model that cutter is worth $500-1500)
I suspect you really want the mfwd in any of the CUTs & subs. Using that logic, I would go with the 2615 over the 3525, despite the extra HP involved, if you need more than 20HP.

The other players are all good machines as well, but since you included Mahindra in your thread title, that's the one I'm addressing.

happy shopping!

While 5 acres is a small place, you may in fact be better off with a 40-60 hp tractor. As you found out, they are cheaper than the 20-25hp machines. They are also much more capable. MUCH. The downside would be if you were expecting to use the tractor for lawn mowing duty. One area to watch is that around 50hp the tractors 3pt hitch change from cat1 to cat2. You can buy bushings for the links, so it's not a big deal.

If you are on level ground, you don't require 4wd. It is MUCH better when using a loader, but filled tires and a 3pt weight were used with good results for decades before 4wd was around.

I wouldn't get the Ford hundred series machines of the 50's and early 60's as they don't have diff lock or some other items that are nice. The 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000 and 6000 series tractors from 1965 up thru the mid '90's will be good. Some of the newer ones will have 4wd. Just make sure it has power steering as it's really tough turning when the bucket is full without! Same general guide lines for other mfg machines.

Good luck tractor hunting.

My dad just got a 2615... My I think my 2wd 3525 will pull a lot more than the 2615 in 4wd;)

But, I think the 2615 will do better in the mud (as far as not getting stuck... not pulling power/traction)... it isn't as heavy... and has better flotation with those R4's...
