Hey everyone, Steve here. I'm new to the forum and I am looking at purchasing a new tractor for my leased farm. It is 130 acres of both timber and pasture. I will be brush hogging open pastures in preparation for seeding (mainly food plots) about 8-12 acres in all. Total of about 25 acres of cutting. General upkeep clearing brush, maybe a rear blade of some sort you know the deal. Here is what I am thinking of purchasing.

John Deere 5055E
72" FEL
72" rotary cutter
6 ft. Disc for turning new ground
Maybe the quick hitch system not sure on this though.
R-1 tires
Canopy for the hot summer months

Would like your input. Thanks
Steve

I am not that familiar with that tractor, but it seems about right as to size and power. It appears to have synch shuttle available but not hydro shuttle and all gears are not synchronized. I personally prefer hydro shuttle or HST and operate both. All that comes at a cost and in the end only you can decide.

I recommend looking at several different brands and models and consider a good dealer absolutely essential. Good luck.

Last fall I was looking to buy a new tractor. A friend of mind had the JD 5055E, and I borrowed it for a weekend of use. I liked it, and it was one of my options. I really wanted more "bells and whistles", but didn't want to pay for them.

I ended up finding a great deal on Craigslist from a guy over in south OPKS. 6 year old L series Kubota with 50 HP. It had the fully synced shuttle transmission -Glide shift. Forward reverse lever. NO clutching needed. The tractor only had 330 hours, and I got it for 1/2 price of new. I will gladly live with a few scratches and wear spots to save a bundle!!

Hey Steve, welcome to the forum from Oklahoma (sort of, anyway). I'm over in Belton for a few months helping with a start up company. Nice area over in Lee's Summit, and the way the summer has already started definatly get that canopy to help keep that KC sun off ya.

I always hear you guys with the green and orange tractors bragging about "resale value" And I always reading about great deals on used stuff. What gives?

I like my 50hp tractor seems about right size for what your talking about. I dont even use my disc anymore to put in food plots since I got a 72in.tiller. Lots of nice tractors to pick from.......

Compared to new, in my opinion I got a great deal. I looked forever for that deal also!
