Still looking...
Hi all. I'm still deciding on what I can afford for a new tractor (2305 or 2520). A local dealer has a new 2305 left, but I'm skeptical about pursuing it because it's been sitting outside at the dealership since October (so roughly 7 months now!) With our drastic Vermont weather, I'm not sure if leaving it out has set it up for premature rust and/or other problems. It has about an hour on the meter.

What do you guys think?

Thanks for your help.

I guess it would depend on what type of deal they would give me. You may find a few things have early problems (like the blinker switch making the blinker blink unexpectedly). Most would be cosmetic such as shift knobs and fuel cap being sun bleached.

If they want premium b/c of limited avail nationwide and you can still get the smoking deal on the 2520, I might be tempted to go that way (no know all of your use situation)

If they are giving you a great deal to move it before the 1023/1026 arrive, and it fits you need, I wouldn't worry about it too much, as long as the hood paint looks good. I would run it around a bit and check hyd. oil and front geal oil for emulsified water. Sometime when they sit they seem to pick that up. Also ask them to drain the tank and replace the fuel filter (only an $8 part, just saves you the effort) in case any water/condensation is iun the tank from sitting so long...

Tractors set outside on dealer lots and the manufacturing facility for months. They're built for outside.
I wouldn't worry about it...

Cars trucks etc. outside some longer than year fine...when own tractor will feel winter but under more stress.

Don't worry about it, many tractors sit outside all their lives.

I wouldn't worry about it, but we own a 2305 and I would go with the 2520 if I had it to do over.

Yes, that's what I really want to do. It just comes down to dollars & cents. I was also considering the 2320, but with the current promotion, dealers are telling me for around a $1000, I can jump from that to the 2520 (really a no-brainer). But there is a significant spread from this left over 2305 to the 2520 and that's what I'm wrestling with. :confused2:

Thanks all for your help.

Well, this might change what you do. The 2305 is no more and hasn't been available for months. It's replaced by the mythical 1023e.

The 2320 can still be found on dealers lots but is also going away, replaced by the 1026r ( or so the dealer has said).

The 2520 is very alive, but unobtainable. Dealer checked again this morning, Deere is now saying mid august delivery.

2720 is very available. Many dealers have one on the lot. Deere has just over 300 of them in inventory and they can be delivered inside a week. It's just not sitting at a great price point for them.

Oh, and don't worry much about a tractor that's been sitting out for bit on the lot. I think you will be fine with it. Honestly, if it has the capabilities you are looking for, then it isn't necessary to go to the bigger tractor. Excess capacity is just bragging rights that won't pay the bills.

Someone else posted here earlier that the 2520 deal requires the purchase of a couple of implements? Thus, in their math, the net savings, while good, were not a straight-forward wad of cash savings. Is that right?

And... Because of the promotion on the 2520, the inventory, in their area was nill and causing a 2-3 month waiting period. If your dealer has a 2320 or a 2520, you'd might want to take a look and see what the monthly difference would be. I'd bet it might be less than you think.

As a past owner of a 2305 and present owner of a 2520, I'm more curious about the actual work you want to do with the machine than the cost of ownership. I would recommend letting that drive the decision first, then work on the economics. How much and what kind of land? What tasks are planned? etc.
