I'm New. And a first time tractor owner 2001 4400, MX5 cutter and 6' blade. I hear lots of bad reviews for 4200-4400 I hope mine isn't one of them. Mine starts up and runs good with 1400 hrs on it.
I got a new seat and replaced it. The hood has a crack close to fuel door probably from trying to fill it up with heavy fuel can. I was worried about mowing field with out any front weight but I mowed a few acres and did just fine except nothing to protect the grill or all the plastic. So iv'e been looking at getting a grill guard and decided just to build one instead. I also decided just to attach it to the front bumper plate for now. Ill try to attach a picture of my new Grill Guard grill guard 3-26.jpgGrill Guard 3rd pic.jpgPic 3-18-13.jpg

Yours is new enough that many of the issues had been fixed by the time it was made. The '98-99 models were the real basket cases, we had a '98 model and it was the worst tractor we've ever owned. At 1700hrs the repairs were getting so numerous that we had to trade it. Yours looks like it's in good shape though, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

I have a 2001 4200 with ~675 hours on it and it's a beast for its size. Enjoy your 4400, it looks to be in good to great shape and should serve you well.

Those 4x00 series machines were pretty popular. As others wrote, there were issues early on (the front tires would scrub the lawn was a big one (Deere replaced the axles)...fogging instrument clusters another). However, considering the units sold, the defective machines were relatively few.
There's a lot of the 4200, 4300 and 4400 machines still around. The 4200 machines had a reputation of being underpowered (I knew one guy who owned one when I lived in PA...he never used "C" range as the tractor wouldn't get out of it's own way)...but there are guys like mjncad (posted above) and JDgreen227 who love their 4200 machines.
So, I expect you'll have years of trouble free life with your 4400...as do most owners of the 4x00 series machines.

I have a 01 4300 with over 2k hours, runs like a champ. Congrats on your purchase. I see a loader in your future. Any 300 series or 430 or 440 loader will work. Make sure you get the 4x00 series mounting brackets.
