I've been looking at this one over a year and a half.. finally pulled the trigger on it. it's got a few warts like hyds and steering and charging.. but I've bought warty items before.. just takes more beating to straighten them out.

That 960 looked OK and drove fine. But the pto clutch was on its last legs. So I'd have to split the tractor and service/replace the clutch pack (probably $1K for parts). That 960 looked big and heavy to me, especially since it's a row crop tractor with bull gears on the rear axle. I didn't think I could handle anything that large.

But. A few months later I bought a 1951 Minneapolis Moline BF, a row crop tractor with bull gears. I've completely disassembled that tractor, had the engine rebuilt and now I'm replacing seals in the tranny, rear axle and in the hydraulics for the 3pt hitch. It'll be my first line parade tractor once I get it back together and running.

That BF weighs about 3000 lb and I had no problem getting that thing apart. The 960 weighs 3600 lb, but seemed a lot bigger to me. So I made a bad decision passing on the 960 because of its size. Oh, well. Live and learn.

I actually found one rust hole that is about the size of a half dolalr.. it has been sanded down and plugged with a gob of bondo.. the owner didn't even conture the bondo.. just painted the lump! it's at the usual rust out places on the rowcrops.. the bottom of a dogleg just above wher ethe lil aluminum piece bolts it to the front bolster. I will cut/stitch in a new piece of metal.. that's a -0- problem issue.

my first priority is to get the hyds working and make her steer without needing popeye arms.. after that I forsee a new alternator, rebuilt start with new drive.. some new gauges, and a rewire, plus a new start switch, solenoid, ignition switch and choke linkage, plus all the gooey stuff in the sumps.

One rim has a rust hole around the tube valve stem that is eventually gonna need repairing.. i may actually just run it till the old tube lets go and then fix it when it is broke down to do the tubes.
