I'd disagree....been harvesting timber for nearly 40 years and never had the use for one.

IF YOU HARVEST TIMBER....you need some way to skid logs. Either a full blown skidder if you do enough to justify it, or a skidding winch for the back of a tractor....or a horse.

Log arches have their place..... for for folks that don't have a tractor, using a 4wheeler or something like that to haul out logs. They only work on fairly flat ground.....logs laying up or down a hillside where you can't position the arch over the top of it won't work.

The ideal setup for a small mill is a 30-60hp 4wd tractor with a front end loader with forks/grapple....simply pick up many of the logs to keep them out of the dirt. Then a rear mount skidding winch to pull out what you can't get up to with the forks, or are too big to pick up with the forks. Cinch the log up to the winch, then pick up on your 3pt hitch to keep all but the tail end of the log out of the dirt...same as the log arch does.
