Tractor
John Deere 3720
Hi, I am new to the whole compact tractor thing. I recently bought a JD 3720 ..was gonna be a 3120..but the 3720 called to me and you know how that goes....figured with 44 Hp that would be more than enough plus the torque figures were 66 vs 101 pound feet so figured that was 70% or so more power.

In any case as hobbiest i now have this piece of equipment which makes me look cool...(i always wanted to be "THE BIG GUY").... but i have no idea what to do with it..i use to to primarly mow my lawn

i was surprised at how manueverable it was as far as mowing with the 72" MMM.

and am very happy with how easy this tractor is to take the loader off.

HOWEVER to get to the point of this post without seeming too much of a ******..

what do these implements do?

box blade?
back blade?

and what implements are the best to level a piece of flat bumpy land.

The box blade is used to level ground among possibly other things. It catches the scraped material in the box and drops it in low spots as you are dragging. I don't have the box blade but I do have a land pride 8' rear blade. It angles and tilts. I use my rear blade for plowing snow ( I drive over the snow with the rear blade angled one way or the other. It works great. I pull with the cutting edge facing the rear of the tractor. It also works good to push with the rear of the blade if you are pushing onto grass or other material you don't want to dig into) I also tilt the RB to grade my 3/10 mile dirt/gravel drive.(Pulling also) It works great for that also.
While the rear blade will level ground the box blade is much better suited for same.
Hope this helps.......Shooter

Get a box blade. Get a good one with good weight and added structural support bars built around the 3PT to the rear blade. The added benefit is they make a great counter weight for you FEL. They are tricky to use at 1st but with patience and time you can level fairly good with them.

Get a 6' model, your machine will easily handle it and it will cover your tracks. Shoot for at least #500 lbs (up to 750).
The weight will help it dig and as said before, a counterweight.

With the ripper shanks on them, you can till up an area pretty good too.

Oh, and be careful on that new machine and welcome to the forum. Post some pics if you can. Go to "my home" and let us know what part of the world you live in. As you already know, there is a wealth of info just waiting to be gleaned from this website. Free for the reading.

Here's another vote for the box blade. I bought mine at the same time as the loader. Now I love my loader, but I realized very quickly that the box blade was much better at grading, leveling and even moving material around the site.

Girvin,

I actually have both for my 3720 tractor. The rear blade is only better than the box blade when attempting to angle grade, ie, moving something either right or left. I do find times when I prefer the RB; those are not many. Most times the box blade will be a better option for you. It also adds more ballast to the back for loader work. Frontier makes an excellent line of Box Blades that are I match compatable, I would not go larger than a 65" though for your machine.

I have a 3520 and the 65" frontier box blade covers my tracks and does a great job with leveling. I added a hydraulic top link to my hookup and it works sweet! Congrats on your new tractor.
