Hello all,
I am new to tractors of any kind and needed one for working my 15 acres as a new homestead. The soil I have is all sand in central texas and I have to run the tractor in 4x4 all the time to get around. I know this is not recommended but is really necessary. What is the best way to maintain the 4x4 system to minimize wear or preventative maintenance?

I do not have any manuals yet, but I do know what engine oil to put in at least, 15w40. but what fluid do I put in the rear gear case? The dipstick under the seat shows low and I really do not want to run it to much without replenishing.

Thanks all

In response to your first question, I would keep a good gear oil in the front axle, keep it well topped-off and check it every time you operate the tractor. Grease everything you can find every couple weeks. In other words, follow what the manual probably says. :)

In the rear, you probably should run "Universal Tractor Fluid" of one kind or another. There are many specifications, but some common ones are JD303 (John Deere), International Harvester's Hy-Tran, Kubota has a product called "Universal Dynamic Tractor fluid" or something like that. Auto parts stores, Wal-Mart, and of course any tractor dealer will have a suitable product. If they are one of the newer places where the clerks are dependent upon the computer to tell them what to get and ask for a tractor model, tell them you have a John Deere 750 or a Kubota L245, since your Mitsubishi won't show up in the computer.

I buy mine in 5 gallon pails, since it usually takes about that much to fill the machine up, sometimes a little more on larger machines or if they have a loader.

I believe you when you said you need to run in 4 wheel drive all the time, but frankly I'm surprised. A 2 wheel drive tractor will usually go far more places than a 2 wheel drive pickup. If you're backing in and out of holes, or pulling a plow or disk, or doing heavy grading, your use of 4 wheel drive is fine. If you can drive a pickup where you're going, disengage the front axle. Especially on hard-packed ground, pavement, etc.

I appreciate the reply. Two wheel drive trucks and tractors get stuck often. I wi keep it in mind to disengage when working on hard pack.

You must be on Padre Island. I've been stuck there before.
