Just purchased a house with approx 4acres. My wife and I plan on raising bees and ducks and am looking into my first scut. I am leaning orange Kubota BX2370 with FEL and 60" mmm. Also wanting to till up a large garden. How would a 3pt harrow work for an established garden? Do I need to spend the money on an actual tiller? Also as far as snow removal. Would the FEL be sufficient or should I purchase the blower or front blade.

Thank you

Bee Man

I recommend a PTO powered TILLER. Whether or not the site for your large garden has been plowed, a roto-tiller will prepare the seed bed every Spring. Tillers are especially effective used with an HST transmission equipped tractor.

For a Three Point Hitch mounted Disc Harrow to work, the garden site will have to have been broken with a plow sometime in the previous three years and you will need a Box Frame Disc Harrow with 18" diameter pans to be heavy enough to work. A BX size tractor will not pull a Disc Harrow with 18" diameter pans fast enough to mix the soil. Nor can you lift a Disc Harrow with 18" diameter pans on the Three Point Hitch of the BX.

Lighter Three Point Hitch mounted Disc Harrows, often with angle-iron frames, do not have enough weight to accomplish soil mixing and distribution satisfactorily.

A towed/pull Box Frame Disc Harrow with 14" pans may work, because all of the pan and frame weight bears on the ground, but these are seldom seen. Disc Harrows in this category are sized for sub-compact tractors like the BX series.

Welcome Bee Man, I know another Bee man (his name is spelt a little different) he uses his tractor to move and load his hives be sure you buy a tractor with forks strong enough to handle the weight (he has a ford boomer). It would also be a good idea to be able to load the hives on a truck or trailer so make sure you can lift high enough to accomplish this. As for the garden a tiller will save time, yield a better result. The loader will work for the snow depending on the length of the drive. If you have a quarter mile a plow might be a good idea.

You'll hear different opinions on this, but I'd recommend a B series, the extra weight and ground clearance will really help in the garden tilling department. You get a lot more tractor for not much $ moving from bx to b. Also, i'd recommend a back blade or a snowblower in addition to the fel for moving snow. Back blades are darn cheap used, especially sizes for the b. They are handy for grading dirt or gravel too. Good luck in your purchase, and welcome aboard.
