I've posted a couple of times over at the John Deere forums, but I'm new here.
A little about me first, some part of my family has been in production agriculture for over 100 years, I've farmed full time, then farmed on the side as I ran a business, now do it for a hobby (crazy idea of fun). I run around 50 head, most of the time a few more, and have a 2355 JD with a 245 loader and a 6430 I bought recently, along with some hay equipment, and various other pieces. I've got around 340 acres of pasture, hay, and woods around the house to enjoy, though Atlanta, GA is approaching quickly. I really enjoy it, and am looking for a small tractor for myself and my eldest to use in his horse barn.
Anyone over here doing any round bale silage? A few folks in my area are getting into it, planting and cutting mostly millet, and I've attended a field day and university feed days regarding it, but I'm wondering if the feed quality and protein are there. Any thoughts or experiences would be greatly appreciated. I still chop corn silage (got a model 38 JD chopper with a one row corn head and a Harrington dump wagon, and we don't get down the rows as quickly as we used to, but still get the job done), but narrowing my equipment inventory down would be nice. Essentially, the round bale silage folks here have a no-till drill, a cutter, rake, baler, and wrapper. I could get rid of the plows, disk, corn planter, chopper, wagon, etc.
Thoughts?
