Yesterday, I picked up my John Deere 430 Garden tractor!

Happy to have it home, I pulled it off the trailer and immediately mowed my lawn!

1400hrs with the 60" deck and 6 suitcase weights.

Needs:
-1 new front tire
-Deck repair: dolly/caster wheels and assembly need replacement/rebuilding and the chute needs repair
-new set of blades
-Drain fuel tank
-HYD service
-2 front bulb sockets
-1 rear bulb socket
-and a little paint and a lot of cleaning!

I need to drain the fuel tank for two reasons, at least thats what I believe... 1) there is a foreign object in there. The previous owner said he thinks that they lost part of a funnel or filler can down there. 2) the annunciator light with the gas pump that says "H2O" under it is illuminating intermittently. I don't have an owners manual, but I'm assuming that there is a sensor that reads water in the fuel? And I must have a high water content in my fuel? Thoughts?

Wants (in somewhat of an order):
-3pt Hitch: Ruegg looks like they have a nice product, any other suggestions?
-Box blade
-JD Rototiller
-Dump cart
-Snow Blower
-4-in-1 scoop

I know shes one heck of a tractor, but any other experience, suggestions or cautions are more than welcomed!

Looks great, that's quite the wish list :)

Only suggestion is don't leave the weights on for lawn mowing.

You may of just put them on for the picture.

Does that tractor have power steering? what engine is in there?

I have a 320, with a 48" deck but just use it for lawn mowing and snow plowing.

Fuel filter is also a water separator. If you look towards the left rear of the engine (as seen from the seat) you should see a square glass (or plexiglass) box. It may be partially covered up by a green bracket, not sure. At any rate, there's a drain at the bottom. Get a bucket or coffee can, open the drain, observe for when water changes to fuel, close drain.

Been many years since I've owned a 430, hopefully I remembered the fuel separator location accurately. Oh, and it's diesel fuel you'll be waiting to come out, not "gas"

I put the weights on the front just for moving it. I did leave them on for mowing that little patch, pre-picture, but they are off now.

It has hydraulic power steering, hyd lift and 2 front remotes. It also has the rear PTO.

The engine is a 3cyl 20hp Yanmar diesel, that purrs like a kitten.

The wish list is a bit extensive... I will be mostly mowing with it, but I also hope to do some landscaping in some more delicate or finished areas where the larger tractors would ruin more than they fixed, hence the hitch, blade, tiller and cart. Though I suppose the tiller isn't paramount...

Thanks, I'll check that sump.

I believe that I referred to it properly as 'fuel' multiple times and only used the inappropriate (even for gasoline engines) term to describe the pump shown on the annunciator.

Wow, for it's relatively small size it has some big features. no comparison to my twin cyl kawi powered lawn mower.

Would love to find one in that condition

I had a 430 twenty years ago before trading it for my 755. Could be the best L&G tractor JD ever made. I had forgotten about the water sensor. My 755 has the same engine as the 430 but does not have that sensor. I have attached the page from the 430 manual regarding draining the water. Enjoy your tractor!

That something in the 'fuel' tank maybe the brass screen that was once on the end of the pickup hose. I cleaned the tank while redoing mine and the hose had broke off. Miss that tractor somedays.

Nice looking machines!

Are they 4x4 too ?

That may be asking to much.

No 4X4 back then. They did have diff lock and split brakes along with a two speed axle. Also three hydraulic circuits. They also predated the x55 tractors with that same hood and grill styling.
