I have just had a Gravely 524 land in my lap.

It came with the rotary plow, rototiller, 30 inch (I think) brush mower, and a rough sickle bar mower (was buried in the leaf litter and dirt).

And it obviously got parked where it had been, because the motor was fried, as I also received most of the mortal remains of a cast iron Kohler engine, long enough taken apart that it retained exactly none, of it's oil. Gonna say this one is NOT a rebuild prospect. Rusted to a fine even 'patina'.

Appears to have come from a Government facility of some sort as it has little 'serial number' sticker all over all the various parts, none of which appear to have been factory, more like inventory control tracking stickers.
I did a bit of a peek around the cases to see if there was a obvious serial number location, but could not find it. Where to look? I am guessing they would have stamped the number in somewhere.

Among the options I have on hand for a re-power, are an 8hp Briggs, and a 6.5hp Chinese Honda Clone. Not too worried about modding or fabricating the tin and such, but of all the missing pieces, I figure that the one I need the most is the dual gear that drives the high-low planetary gears at the input end. Is this gear available? Anyone have the DP and tooth counts available?

I do have the adapter plate for the Kohler, too. I understand that depending on the engine chosen, I may have to play jiggery pokery with the plate thickness to space out the engine correctly. Yeah?

All for now. Thanks for any help.

Cheers

On the left side (from operators perspective) look on side of the front casting where the attachment bolts on- there should be a metal tag riveted just below the bulge in the casting.
The rear planetary is $$$$ and fairly popular... all of the kohler powered 2 wheelers with the double gear and the 400 series riders should fit. You can usually find some hulks for way less than parts cost.

Usually. :)

I won't swear to mine being the only Gravely within a days drive of here, but they sure are not common as they are around some areas. Finding a hulk to rob out is seeming to be not very likely. Won't say never, but...

I actually found and downloaded the Illustrative Parts List for the 500 series tractors, and they kindly included the Pitch and tooth count info therein, along with a great deal of useful info not often found in parts books these days. By memory, it, 10 and 12 DP, 21 and 30 teeth count. PN for the stepped shaft version to fit the correct Kohler crank is PN 17838P1.

I am more like to dig out some gears and build one up than to actually order the factory part. But we shall see. If I get bored enough, I can always make them.

Thanks for the info on the serial number location. I do not recall seeing any riveted on tags, but will check the area again, at least to see if thee are rivet holes there. Machine seems in better shape than to have had enough wear and tear to have lost the tag, so it may be under some of the mung, or it may have been removed.

Project 42, for now. Got some haying to accomplish first.

Cheers
