Bought a used Lincoln 225 welder with 50 ft. of cable. Set it up today first time, zzzzt, zzzt a couple times and then only the humming sound in the unit. No more arcing between the electrodes, nada.

Checked the CB which was OK of course since the humming still came from the unit.

Any ideas? Suggestions?

First check to make sure the ground is making good contact. Check the duty cycle 30% means 3 minutes on 7 minutes off.

I agree Ground 1st. Might want to flip to a couple of different amp settings to make sure you're not in between settings. Also might want to pull the cover to make there is no mouse nest or other obstruction. There's not a lot going on inside the box.

Make sure the cable fittings on the machine are somewhat clean.
Make sure the steel is clear of rust where the ground clamp goes, secure a ground clamp to the clean area... Grind to clean steel where you plan on welding. Possibly turn the amps up, possibly a different rod. Maybe start with 1/8" 6011 or 7014 rods because they are fairly easy to work with.

Turn your breaker off and back on. Check your plug for power on both phases.

What type of electrode? 7018 is hard to restrike.

Also note your welder is AC. Stick with the rods that work well on AC like 6011 and 6014. “Weldingtipsandtricks” on YouTube has great info. Check him out.

I’m thinking it’s an easy fix.....good luck.

If you mess around inside the box, make sure it is not plugged in!!!!

You can take a voltage measurement of the Open Circuit Voltage between the "stinger" and the ground clamp. Report back. Maybe up to 75 or 80 volts AC with no load.

OH... what fun is that? Make life exciting.....:)

they are simple machines. If a setting is not working its most likely a burnt wire on the selector inside. Pop the cover off and have a look .
