Hello all!

We are currently looking for a new gun safe for pistols only. The majority of which are semi auto ranging from full size to sub compact, with a couple snub-nose revolvers thrown in for fun.

At most we are talking 10 pistols for this safe. Most are in factory cases but if a safe had the egg crate foam or individual slots for each one I would toss the cases in a closet.

So guys and gals, what ya got? What do you wish you had? What do you wish you didn't have?

Thanks, DT86.

I guess it depends on what level of security you're after. This V-line is pretty decent for closet storage and allowing quick access, but it's not as secure as some of the bigger safes. It could mount between the studs in a master bedroom closet. I have one of these, plus a larger fireproof safe.

Apart from that, there are plenty of safes to choose from, especially if you're only looking at storing 10 handguns. Whatever you do, make sure you anchor the safe. Everyone always says to get the biggest safe you can fit/afford and I'll second that opinion. Once you get looking around, you start thinking of a lot more things you might want to keep secure (heirlooms, jewelry, legal documents etc.).

I talked to several locksmiths before buying a safe. Criminals targeting a house with a safe are extremely rare: most of the safe jobs they were experienced with were "inside jobs" where someone knew the combination. We also lock up the tools that might be used to attack the safe, and have it in a location that is hard to get at (and down a bunch of stairs).

The flip side is that if someone knows you have a gun safe and targets you, you're not dealing with the average crack head.

Security aside, the big question is whether you want fire protection, and how much. If these are irreplaceable pistols, probably yes, if it's a collection of modern production arms, not as much.

Don't forget to check with your insurance company on coverage. Some will give you a discount, and some require a rider if the value of your collection is above a certain value or individual arms have very high value.

A friend of mine collects very old, mostly one-of-a-kind rifles. He favored a number of smaller safes over one large one.

Thinks I didn't realize where the gap around the door and the way the bars in the door are built. I had assumed that for the money, they where all going to be strong enough. Seeing the difference has been shocking. Now when I look at safes, I see them totally differently!!!!

The thing is, any safe is better than no safe. If you've got the budget, you can get a larger more secure safe with better fire protection, but if you only have short money, buy what you can afford.

Before I had a safe I had a simple sheet metal Homak metal cabinet. Now I use it for ammo, and tools.

Does anyone know of a safe with an interior like the box shown in the following link? I know I could buy a safe and then stash a box like it inside but figure there would be a company that made such a safe.

Securely bolting the safe to the floor will help a lot. If the safe can't be turned on its side it is much harder to pry open. I don't mean a couple of dinky screws, but a serous duty faster. If it is on concrete something like this will do.
