Just wanted to say hello, I'm a new owner of an old yanmar 240? Bought the little tractor a few months ago, been using it to bush hog 4 acre field and to spread gravel on my driveway. The tractor seems very adequate for my needs. Any advice on determining the year would be appreciated. One point of interest is rear tire size..ie: mine are 12.4 16 ag tread! Well, that is all for now, glad to have found your site. GP

Some basic info on your tractor is available from tractordata.com. Another source would be Hoyetractor.com. Hoye is also a source for parts. The 3 digit YM series are US market destination tractors with the 1st 2 digits designating the engine HP.
Mine is a grey market 4 digit YM series intended for the Japan market then later brought ti the US. N
I do not know of any way to narrow down the exact year that yours would have bern built. If it is the red, white and gray variety, it would a be newer one, whereas the green and gray would be earlier years.
Welcome to Yanmars and the forum!

I have read that sometimes a date can be found on the rear wheels. If so, it might give you an idea of the date. Might look like 4/79. I think the 240 was just manufactured late 70s and early 80s.

Good day, gpbuz1!- I have 240D with FEL and for my property and use, which sounds very much like yours, it is perfect. I have it for 13-14 years now and have had very little trouble. It is green, not the red/white/grey CoyPatton referred to and somehow I know it is was made around'83 . If my poor memory is correct there is a site somewhere that if you put in the serial number it will tell you the manufacture year. I can't locate right now but will keep looking. Tractor production didn't go by model years, any changes were made "on the fly" so to speak which is why in some manuals it will indentify parts by the range of serial numbers if they have been modified or subbed in. Once a model was designed it really didn't change much through the production run which spanned years. If you have the serial numbers you should be able to narrow it down. I'm sorry it was years ago someone online pointed out the site to me and for the life of me I can't remember anything other than that. I'll keep working the old brain and hopefully come up with it. Perhaps another of the old boys here will. Excellent group of people here in this group and a phenominal body of knowledge about these things. Welcome.

I've owned one since 2003. They're indestructible!

'81 was the final year of production (not sale) for YM240 and that single year had a 'Donaldson' type air cleaner external on the left side of the engine.

YM240 first series had the headlights external to the hood and the hood hinged at the back, second series starting about 1978 had the hood hinged at the front and had headlights in the grille.

All the YM240''s were green, never red.

YM240 Parts Manual says 'after 1975'.

Here's a post with several pages from YM240 original showroom brochures.

And here's a chart, not by year, but by 'revision level'. I don't know of any more precise data.

It's all mechanical. Look for a kinked cable. Lube the cable.

I fixed a jumpy one by removing it, turning it face down, and pouring a small amount of lock lube (graphite in solvent) around the input.
