Hi All,
After several months of looking I finally pulled the trigger on a back hoe loader. Shes got 5,500 hours, one owner and though the engine is smooth, she needs TLC. A bunch of the cylinders are leaking, and the pins have slop but shes strong and the price was fair.

I own 3 acres of which I can only use one as there is a large mound of dirt, rock and apparently ledge going through the property. I am trying to excavate through it and build a workshop in the back. Admittedly, its a larger project than I originally signed up for but fun. Ive got 35 hours on her and I would say I'm about half way done. I already had to rebuild the water pump as the bearing was bad and I was adding a gallon every hour, but shes been running great.

Since this is my first heavy machine I have a few questions I was hoping you guys could help me with:
1. I have a few cylinders that have leaks, how do I know its about $20 bucks for the seal kit and $60 for the packing but how do I know if i need to replace the packing or just the seal? There isnt fluid spraying out of anywhere just some light dripping.

2. its happened twice now that when operating on a 15% incline the engine cut off- as if i turned the key to off. There was no sputtering or jerking it just shut off. The first time I thought perhaps it was low on oil and I think the machine has a shut off switch, so I added some but the second time it happened everything was fine and it started right up again. Is this a symptom of anything?
3. is there a way to disable the 'return to dig' feature -its obnoxious for my tight working space?

4. The 310D has shuttle shift, and 4 speeds. I spend almost all of my time in 1st gear, but if I was going faster would I shift it like a car going to 2nd then 3rd..etc at the appropriate speed or just start in that gear? I've read conflicting opinions...

5. There is a lot of slop in the front loader joints. The pins themselves (unfortunately) dont look very worn. So I was wondering if these parts use replaceable bushings or if its just the steel thats worn and aside from keeping it well greased there isn't anything else I can do about it?

6. Last one, sorry. I'd like to add a hydraulic thumb but I dont have an aux line, I heard of some people plumbing a selector valve off one of the outriggers and using that. Does anyone have any experience to share?

Very much appreciated!!
George

It appears as if the boom has replaceable bushings(parts keys 6 & 11). I think engine dying on incline would fuel related such as no enough fuel flow.
parts key 6 T128309 Bushing - BUSHING ADD 66.64 USD 133.28 USD
parts key 11 T76638 Bushing - BUSHING ADD 51.93 USD 103.86 USD

Since trans has a syncronizer(parts key 19 1st photo) I would think it could be shifted on the move.

Had some alternator problems, took it out to get rebuilt and it turns out the previous owner did a real hack job installing it. There was about an inch of washers used as spacers, the timing case was cracked into three pieces underneath it and it was shaking at low rpms.
Dreading having to replace the entire timing cover I decided to relocate the alternator mount to two 3/8 tapped holes behind the oil filter. This should take the strain off the cover and allow me to JB weld it together so it doesnt keep leaking oil. 2014-12-27 18.03.36.jpg2014-12-27 18.03.15.jpg2014-12-27 17.32.37.jpg

I found the leak to be in one of the lines by the bracket. Its not very big and I think cutting out about 1/2" of the pipe will remove the rusted spot and allow me to use a compression fitting. Any suggestions where to get a compression fitting capable of such pressure?

Take that line out and have a hydraulic rubber one made in it's place. Should cost about $30.

should it be just a replacement for that section of metal line or should i do one hose that goes from the cylinder to the valve body?

You should be able to get a replacement steel line from your dealer,
You could go all the way to the cylinder if you wanted to, or get a "joint" and attach the other smaller line you get made to the other one.
Are you sure it's leaking from the steel line "hold down" clamp?
I would clean that section up good and make sure, from your picture, it looks like the back line is leaking at the hose fitting.
You could also just remove the steel line and bring it to a machine shop and have them repair it.
Many options here, and your lucky you have easy access to it.
