Tractor
Mahindra 3616 HST
Hi,
My 3616 HST will be delivered next week. After reaching 69 years old and maintaining 12 acres with a chain saw ,wheelbarrow ,shovel and various other hand tools I decided it was time for a tractor. It comes with a bucket and 6' bush hog . I would like to get a wood chipper any suggestions? Hope I made the right choice.

Like most implement types - wood chippers come in all sizes, types & price ranges. I guess it kind of depends upon how often you will be using it, dealer support and your budget. Another consideration - will you be disposing of mainly trees and need a chipper or mainly limbs, vines, leaves etc and want a shredder or both and get a chipper/shredder. Consider - if just a chipper - how big are the trees you will be chipping. Remember a tree 6" on the butt and 30' long is a real booger to horse around, pull to the chipper and lift up to chip.

I have a 64hp tractor and a Wallenstein BX62S that will chip 6" trees - but only if I can get them there and up into the chipper. I thin my Ponderosa pine trees annually and chip between 750-900 small pines every year.

The Wallenstien BX42S would be an ideal chipper match for your tractor. There are many other great brands - search for "chippers" on this site.

By the way - Welcome to TractorByNet.

To the forum and tractor fun. What took you so long in getting a tractor? You must just love doing hard work? I waited until I was 67 to get my first tractor but that is because I didn't have the land before then.

I've had the property 14 years and I don't mind hard work but it's starting to get the best of me.

A chipper is one of those things that if underpowered is miserable to use. So powering off of your tractor is a great idea. I bought a woodmaxx because I wanted something that could eat it as fast as I could put it in, and I've been happy with it. (tractor is a 7520) Not the cheapest, but well built and does the job. I got the hydraulic feed. It looks like the prices have gone up a bit since I bought though, unfortunately. My only complaint with the machine is sometimes small piece of wood or material will jam the feed rollers, but it's usually just a matter of reversing and forwarding a couple times.
