New Lawn

I’m building a new house and will need to put in about two acres of lawn. My
brother-in-law a part time farmer has a seed drill. He says that along with the
grass seed we should also seed with oats. Says that the oats will grow very
quickly and will shade the new grass eliminating the need for straw. After the
grass takes hold and the first cut is done the oats die out. He said he did this to
his lawn and it looks good. Has anyone ever done this? If so, how did it look?

Haven't done that with a new lawn but I can see how it would work. Have used oats on banks for erosion control and to hold seed while it got started. That worked well and the oats just died out at the end of the season.

Your brother is exactly right. It's a great way to plant new grass. It's the way we've done it for decades.
