Tractor
none yet
I just purchased 10 partially cleared acres. I am wanting to purchase a tractor for brush clearing/mowing/hay moving/dirt moving. I know nothing about tractors and have a smaller budget. Can I get any suggestions?

You probably do not want a sub-compact tractor, which only has 9" of ground clearance.

You probably want a compact utility tractor (CUT) which run the gamut of 12" - 14" of ground clearance and 20-horsepower to 45-horsepower and have a "CATEGORY 1" three point hitch. New, these start at $16,000 with a Front End Loader (FEL). A CUT can pull a 5' Bush Hog.

There is nothing wrong with a well maintained, used, diesel tractor.

Personally I think it requires at least 30-horsepower to do useful work with a tractor.

Following is a LINK to useful threads from the T-B-N archive from others in your situation.

Welcome to TBN. Perhaps the first question should be, "What is your budget?"

G'day and welcome to TBN from Downunder.

Looking for your first tractor can be daunting. At the bottom of this thread is a blue box titled 'Similar Threads' that you can use to see what has been asked & advised in the past. We're more than willing to help (and spend other people's money :)) but a lot of your questions can be answered in this way.

Enjoy the site.

I did that about 9 years ago--bought 10 acres of flat pasture land.
My first tractor was a 2005 Kubota B7510HST (21 hp engine, 17 hp pto, hydrostatic tranny, 4WD, power steering) with the LA302 FEL (4-ft wide bucket, about 800 lb lift to 6.5 ft height). Cost: $12.6K plus tax.

Mowed the weeds with a 4-ft wide King Kutter brush hog (aka bush hog, shredder, slasher). Cost: $500 at Tractor Supply.

When I decided to go into haying, I traded that little Bota for a new 2008 Mahindra 5525 (55 hp engine, 45 hp pto, 2WD, gear tranny, power steering, 3 rear hydraulic remotes) with the ML250 FEL (6-ft wide bucket, 2950 lb lift at the pins to 10.5 ft height, skid steer quick disconnect on the FEL arms). Cost: $19K less trade-in.

If your budget is small and you want a tractor with an FEL, that'll put you in the used tractor market. Post back if that's what you want to do and you'll get many suggestions on possible tractors that will fit your situation.

Good luck and welcome to TBN.

moving hay? like rounds.

find the size of the common rounds in your area, then get the weight. use that to dictate the minimu size machine you will want. do you wnt to move them ont he laoder? requires a bit more tractor to do so than ont he 3pt.

do you want to carry 2 at a time? etc?

answer these..
