Kubota L4610 HST
Well, after many months of research (much of it at TBN), comparison, etc, I finally swallowed hard and bought an L4610. It was delivered today. They forgot to install the block heater and are going to replace one decal (it wasn't installed properly and they warned me before delivery--I would have had to wait 1.5 more weeks before I got it if I had waited for it to arrive).

I put about 3.5 hours on it this afternoon, mostly mowing. I was quite pleased with the Bush Hog mower (72" RD). The tractor didn't tear up my lawn on turns, but I do have to be a little careful with starts and stops (mowing in 2WD, the R1/ag rears would tear if I start/stop too quickly). I was worried about it tearing up the turf on tight turns, but that didn't seem to be a problem (with or without the loader).

The thing is more than twice the Ford 1700 I used before. I stalled it in mid-range pushing some debris over a hillside in 2WD--no spin, just a stall. I tried the loader out on a car destined for the junkyard--was able to lift the rear of it 5 ft without even a strain. That's why I wanted the 4610/LA852! I also had success pushing a large (~4'x4'x3') boulder that the 1700 couldn't even think of moving.

Sorry to ramble on, but I had quite a good time mowing and cleaning up with it. No complaints save one minor annoyance: folding the ROPS up and down every time I park it in the barn is a nuisance.

There should be a picture of my wife mowing with it attached.

Thanks for all the help and advice (much of it was indirect, but it helped a lot--I never would have gotten an HST without reading TBN).

Tractor time tomorrow!

-Chris

Another picture. I should have mentioned that I was doing the mowing around here with a push mower. Certain areas haven't been mowed yet this year--hence it is more of a hay field than a lawn.

I'll probably put the woods rotary cutter on tomorrow (old MX5 Dixie Cutter that barely lives on) as it does better in such deep grass.

Another picture.

Congrat's on the new tractor. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

There was a thread on replacing the ROP's bolts with a 5/8" hitch pins. I have never done it because of my concerns about it being safe. /w3tcompact/icons/tongue.gif

The ROPS need to be up to provide any protection and make sure you wear your seat belt!!!

Also, why did you go with the 72" RD?

Chris -- Nice rig! I know what you mean about the ROPS. I had to drop and raise it every time I went in the garage or under our breezeway...then one day I forgot and accidently raised the breezeway a few inches. Now it fits just fine. /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

What I did to make folding and raising the ROPS easier was to throw away the pivot bolt and drill out the threads, then install a hitch pin in lieu of the bolt. It rattled a lot, so I added a large flat washer and a spring to keep it under tension. Works fine, and dealing with the ROPS now only takes a few seconds.

Lifting the car...I might be needing a larger tractor for that! /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

After looking at the pictures that was what I was going to post. NEVER run with the rops down. I hate to be the tractor police but if it helps someone then so be it.

Ok now that I feel better, you made a very good choice in tractors and the hst trans just tops it off.

I'm just getting use to the ROPS. I never had one before.I went with 72" because it seemed a good combination with the 4610. Wider might be a problem with high spots (scalping), smaller would make me impatient /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif.-Chris

Pete -- Thanks! I've put 7 hours on it since it was delivered yesterday and enjoyed every minute. Thanks for the idea on the ROPS. I thought about pins and was worried about rattle. The spring should take care of the rattle. I'll add this to my customization list. I'm not sure whether the header in my barn, the ROPS, or something else would give, but I don't want to find out. I'm thinking that I'm going to mount a strike bar 3' out from the door, linked to an air horn. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif I am quite impressed with the loader lift. I managed to lift a large chunk of an old foundation today by accident. You have to be a little careful what the bucket gets under--if you lift the bucket, whatever is around lifts with it. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif-Chris
