Tractor
B6100 hst and a Bolens Iseki 17hp
I have ordered a L4400 HST with 4 in 1 and a 1600mm hammer mulcher.
I have since order purchased more land
I have to cut approx .50 acres heavy pasture and 50 acres good pasture
Ground is all flat.
Can get wet thats why I origonally thought the 44 would be a good size.
I thought 44 loader would be more usefull than bigger models on general chores?
I changed to HST after reading TBN forums so loader work would be easier
Should I have bought bigger. I can still change my mind with dealer

Hello and welcome to TBN. Hard to answer your question without a lot more specifics. The L4400 is a strong tractor. However, mowing 50 acres of pasture will be a big chore for anything in the mid-range tractor size. You won't see much change in net productivity by going to a larger L series; you'd need to move up to a much larger tractor (M9540?) that could pull something like a 16' bat wing mower. But the L series will give you a bit more versatility because they're not so ginormous as to be unwieldy.

Did you tell your dealer what you plan to do??? ...was this his recommendation or did you just order it?

You have any information on the 1600mm hammer mulcher? Like what it needs PTO wise?

My neighbor has the L4400 and uses a 6-ft brush hog to maintain about 8 acres. It's a 2-hour job to mow that field. With 50 acres to mow, I'd be looking for a larger tractor (60-80 hp pto) to handle a 10-ft wide mower--unless you like to clock a lot of seat time on that 4400.

I agree with others, more detail is needed such as are you going to be grazing your pasture with only occasionally clipping weeds etc.

Also what is your time frame? We farmed with 32-40 HP tractors, so a L4400 is big enough if you aren't pressed for time.

I guess the question is going to be is this the right tractor for your tasks and time frame?

if you can change your mind on that deal i would.you can step up to a MX5100 HST w/fel.wich would be big enough to pull a 10ft shredder.

Thanks to all
I am in Australia. I do realise More HP is required to minimise seat time.
The ? is will L4400 have a nuff grunt for the twice a year clip requied may take 4 days i guess,as its alround ability will be more usefull for all the day to day tasks ie loader work tilling ect than a bigger unit
Or should i just go BIG
I did talk to dealer i probly did not tell him exact tasks as purchase was only a dream at that time.
I originally looked at 3400) (price got me in the shop.
existing property has about 25acres grass (On my Bolens 17hp + 3 ft slasher) seat hours = alot (Some times on my B6100HST) more seat hours
These are both work horses I love. Will be hard to part with.May just build a bigger shed.
I only trim about twice a year max, Grazing Constantly
Thats why I figured L4400 would be perfect

With purchase of ajoining 130 acres 70 or so cleared in very poor condition not mowed for 10 years+ I figured more HP may be required. Hence my tread

My plans , pay contractor for initial slash and clear.
after this graze and clip approx 2 times a year to keep growth comming
Move soil to level fill holes. Garden ect.

Is the MX5100 then the M7040 a better option ?

I realise its a ? of how long is a bit of string but what better place to ask
I appreciate you comments

Guess I'd have to weigh in the L4400 is enough for what ya want to do in the long run. Flat land with a brushhog isn't a high horsepower long as you take yer time the first time and stick with a 6ft or smaller cutter. Just my 2cents...

That certainly is a conundrum. If I have learned anything in my 50+ years operating tractors, it is that in most cases involving a farm there is no one tractor that will do it all well. Sacrifice is always going to come at one end of the spectrum or the other. What you gain in ease of operation in your larger tasks from going up in size, you lose in day to day utility.

We use an M8540 and love it, but we have to use another, smaller tractor such as our Massey Ferguson 375 or Kubota L5030 for places the bigger tractor just won't fit. We can do it all and have in the past with the smaller tractors, but can't "do it all" with the big one.

I do believe the L4400 will do all of the work, but I would keep one of the smaller machines, most likely the Kubota. Personally though, I would probably give very serious consideration to the MX5100 and wouldn't make a final decision without comparing them side by side. A spec sheet and brochure can only tell you so much.

go for the MX5100, almost the same price and its quite a bit more tractor. its got the front end of a utility, the rear is roughly the same...well to me

unless you do really a lot of FEL work, then go gear and you will save even more

and i agree the next step upwould be the 7040, bypassing the 50 and 6040,,,,mostly true here in canada where the 60 and up PTO HP are exempt from all taxes...thats 16% but thats still a lot more money
then the MX
