Was at the JD dealer today kicking the tires on the new (2010) 4000 series tractors and noticed the newer ones with R4 tires had the rims welded on the inside where there used to be bolts to allow changing positions for different widths. Dealer said JD started shipping 4000 series with R4 tires on solid rims in late 2009. I thought the 4105 model rims were always that way but not the others.

Anyone have a late model 4000 series with R4's on solid rims (no bolts for width)??

My prior 3720 had the welded rims with R4 tires. My 2009 4520 has the bolt on rims and R1 tires. The bolt on rims provide several width settings for the tires. I would guess few people change positions on the R4 tires and tend to leave them set on the narrow side. Probaby cheaper to make a welded rim. The welded rims on my 3720 R4s only could be changed side to side and the width only changed 1-2".

Looking at pictures of my 4520 with R4s, the rims are welded and not adjustable other than flipping sides on the tractor. I remember seeing the section in the manual on adjusting the position of the tire and thinking that must be some option I didn't get.

So my late model 2009, solid rims, no bolts.

Deere did make a rolling change on which wheels come with the r4 rubber. They are all one pice wheels, r1 however can still be had with the 4 position adjustment.

Thanks for your input. I have a 2007 3720 with R4 tires and they are welded like your 3720 and offer very little in width options. That is why my tires are loaded with Rim Guard to help with stability and traction. Have considered installing wheel width extensions also but have concluded they are not necessary for what I'm currently using the tractor for.
Have been thinking about trading my 4320 for either a 4520 or 4720. This tractor is used mainly for mowing steep hills but also for backhoe work, FEL work, snow plowing and grapple work. The tires are filled with Rim Guard and the wheels are set on wider (not widest) position for stability. Will figure something out if I trade.

Thanks for your input and confirming what I've heard. The 4320 Operators Manuals available online (two versions) still show 8 positions for the R4 tires/wheels.

Thanks for confirming what I' heard. Guess I'll have to live with it if I trade my older 4320.
