Hello, new member here in LA. Currently tractor shopping and debating new/used. Anyone have any advice how to inspect a used tractor or have any experience on the subject.
Thx

Here are a few suggestions: Check out the frame for signs of twisted metal or welding repairs. Check the tread and tire wear. Check battery cables and connections for corrosion. Check the engine and hydraulic oil. Start the engine-there should be no signs of black smoke coming from the exhaust. Check the PTO. Check the 3-point hitch. Drive the tractor. Check for clutch slippage. If possible, connect an implement to the tractor and see if all the hydraulics, PTO, and 3-point hitch are operating properly. Listen for engine knock or miss. Check for oil leaks. If you are buying from a local source, check and look to see if the other equipment they own is taken care of. Don't be in a rush, and don't be afraid to ask to drive the tractor with an implement on. This is important. After driving, check again for any leaks. Welcome aboard and Best Wishes.

Which area? I'm just south of baton rouge in prairieville. I just sold a deere 3320 and bought a new 4120 power reverser with 400 cx loader. There is a wealth of information on this site. This is my fourth deere compact tractor, all have been trouble free. Down here the choices are kubota deere and mahindra as far as what the local dealers offer. Deere while more exspensive was just my preference.

Hello and welcome aboard. :welcome:

Have you ever owned a tractor? or even used a tractor? If not, find a neighbor who has one and learn. Read a lot on this forum. Visit the local dealerships and ask questions. Take your time. Buyer's remorse is no fun.

How many hours are you planning on using a tractor per year? How many acres are you maintaining? What kind, and what size implements are you planning on using?

One more thing. A good source for used tractors in our state is:
Louisiana Market Bulletin

This publication covers a larger area, but you can also search here:
TractorHouse.com
Note: you can usually pick up a printed copy of TractorHouse at your local feed store.
