Welcome to TBN. :)

I moved this post to the New Holland Owning/Operating forum, as you will be much more likely to get a response here. ;)

I don't know if this will help you but a similar thing happened on my 2120. I simpley squited all the linkage with WD-40, moved it a few times and then aprayed everything with spray lithium grease (which foams, enters gaps and then solidifies as solid grease).. Problem solved. Make sure and grease where the rods enters transmission case.

Do you have a FEL on your TC40A? The easiest way to get the tractor out of fwd is to raise the front wheels off the ground using the loader bucket. What you are experiencing is called driveline windup and is caused by the front wheels not turning at the exact same rate as the rear wheels, so it puts the driveline into a torsional bind. You can normally relieve this by driving slowly forward and rotating the steering wheel left and right or you can just lift the wheels with the loader. I've done this so many times it's just second nature for me to do. Mine goes into fwd pretty easy, but it can be a bear to get out if you don't relieve that driveline windup.

To help in putting it into 4wd, just move the tractor a tad by hitting the forward pedal. To get it out, often it is a little more difficult, but forcing it rarely works. I always get-by simply by stepping on the forward pedal very slightly, just enough to make the tractor move a little, and before the tractor stops (and pretty much at the same moment I've lifted my foot from the pedal), move the 4wd shift lever out of 4wd. It may take a couple of times to get it, but I've always been successful. If you are not on level ground, I think the issue will be far more difficult. The trick is to be moving the lever just at the point were the tractor is sort-of in that "coast" situation, so the drivetrain is under no load.

Jim,, I also have that problem sometimes, but once or twice the linkage needed lubrication so bad that even using the bucket or moving the tractor didn't help. Lubrication did though.
